Public Education
Public education development will begin immediately following the execution of the contract to
explain to the customers the upcoming changes to the solid waste, recyclable material, organics
materials and plant materials programs. Public Education will also commence prior to any new
programs that are amended by this contract.
As new programs are developed and implemented by BFI, BFI can develop and provide from the
commencement date through the implementation one or several of the following items:
. Initial Mailing - Develop a public education piece that will explain to the residents the
new service enhancements.
. Develop a "How to Brochure"/calendar explaining the overall recyclables and green
waste programs and the materials to be collected.
. Develop a door hanger/flyer/mailer of the specific collection days; observed Holidays;
holiday tree and annual clean up event schedules.
. Prepare and use a corrective actions notice to be used when customers set out
inappropriate materials.
. Educational door hangers or cart hangers will be prepared and distributed as needed and
defined through mutual agreement between the SBWMA and BFL
BFI will coordinate public education efforts with the SBWMA. Outreach materials can be
developed in multiple languages (English and Spanish) at the discretion of the SBWMA.
Customer Service Staff
Our customer service team will be staffed, trained and available when the initial public education
hits the streets. They will be able to answer any questions, which may arise from the change in
service providers, program changes and prepare administratively for billing the customers.
Public Education and Outreach
BFI will develop and implement a public education program that provides information to
customers. This program includes information with respect to commencement of service during
implementation of said programs, education about source reduction, reuse, and recycling
opportunities and the following:
Green Waste: Describing to customers how to prepare green waste for
collection (such as cutting of items to fit into the containers) and the appropriate
use and placement of carts.
Recyclables: Identify the acceptable materials that the customer can place in the
recyclables container together with common contaminants to be excluded, and
the appropriate use and placement of carts.
