.TA-i
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

July 1,2002

Subject
Surplus Property

Recommendation
Adopt the resolution declaring computer equipment to surplus property and authorize the
transfer of the equipment to the Redwood City Education Foundation.

Background
Over the last year, several departments throughout the City have upgraded their
computers. As a result, we have 23 computers being sent to surplus. These computers
have no resale value and could likely end up in the landfill if we send them through the
normal disposal (auction) process. Although these items are no longer useful to the City,
they ara still functional and could be of particular use to disadvantage families and/or youth
in our community.-The Redwood City Educational Foundation was approached and has
agreed to receive the surplus property and in turn make sure that it is distributed where it is
most needed in our community.

Government Code Section 37350 permits the disposal of any City personal property for the
common public benefit. The computers have no resale value. Their donation to the
Redwood City Educational Foundation would be of greater benefit to the public than would
their placement in a landfill, t

Based on the City Council's priorities in Youth and Education it is recommended that the
City Council authorize the transfer to the Redwood City Educational Foundation.

Alternative
Council can elect not to transfer the equipment to the Redwood City Educational
Foundation.

Fiscal Impact
The computers have no resale value and are surplus to the City.

~.D~anna V.
