Project Summary (1 page) It is Redwood City's belief that quality recreation and community services should be made available to people of all backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles by providing accessible progressive programs, building strong partnerships, integrating social services and resources, assessing community needs and offering a safe and welcoming environment. Our goal is to make all of our recreation programs fully inclusive to people with disabilities. We want to aggressively market to those with disabilities to let them know that we support their personal endeavors and welcome them in our community. In short, we wish to establish a Community Inclusion Initiative. We will do this by first hosting a Community Inclusion Partnership Consortium that will open an imperative line of communication between various agencies along the peninsula. This consortium will take part in an intensive training program that will assist various agencies, including Redwood City, on the critical steps to executing inclusion. Redwood City will then hire a Program Coordinator whose main purpose will be to recruit and trai.Í1 volunteer mentors who will escort participants with disabilities to and £rom recreation programs, provide any assistance participants --- may need in the classes of their choice, and coordinate with the Community Inclusion Partnership Consortium by executing monthly phone conference meetings, bi-monthly in-person meetings and overseeing the publication of a specialized Recreation Guide with the sole purpose of marketing all various programs along the peninsula to people with disabilities. Our goal is to give people with disabilities a personal choice in th,e type of leisure recreation they wish to embark on, train community leaders in the field of recreation on how to achieve this goal, provide participants with disabilities the supervision, transportation and/or financial assistance they may need to join such programs and ultimately create a more diverse, inclusive and social experience for everyone in our community. We believe our program will act as a new and innovative model for other recreation departments in the years to come in the process of marketing, recruiting and facilitating full inclusion in a recreation setting.
