Project Frome

Contracting Entity: City of Redwood City Parks. Recreation & Community Services

Title of Proposal: Community Inclusion Initiative

Briefly describe type of program and services that will be provided:
Our goal is to make all of our recreation programs fully inclusive to people with disabilities. We
want to aggressively market to those with disabilities to let them know that we support their
personal endeavors and welcome them in our community. In short, we wish to establish a
Community Inclusion Initiative.

~

,
,

We will do this by first hosting a Community Inclusion Partnership Consortium that will open an
imperative line of communication between various agencies along the peninsula. This consortium
will take part in an intensive training program that will assist various agencies, including Redwood
City, on the critical steps to executing inclusion. Redwood City will then hire a Program
Coordinator whose main purpose will be to recruit and train volunteer mentors who will escort
participants with disabilities to and from recreation programs, provide any assistance participants
may need in the classes of their choice, and coordinate with the Community Inclusion Partnership
Consortium by executing monthly phone conference meetings, bi-monthly in-person meetings and
overseeing the publication of a specialized Recreation Guide with the sole purpose of marketing
all various programs along the peninsula to people with disabilities.

Total number of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families that will be
served by this proposal: 4500 Consumers Unspecified Family Members

Describe briefly population that will be served in this proposal:
The population to be served will be children, teenagers, adults and seniors with disabilities
throughout San Mateo County. As of2003, San Mateo County had a population of 700,000
people, with 108,000 of those people, ages 5+, reportedly having a disability (US Census
Bureau). This number continues to grow rapidly in our county. Golden Gate Regional Center of
San Mateo County has recorded 2532 clients in their agency that could directly benefit from an
inclusion program.
