A>-

-1:6\9

- ,
";' ,

PERSONAL APPEARANCES:
planning Director, Ken Schroete.r, assisted by Speer McClellan,
presented the following three items for review and considera-
tion of the Park & Recreation Commission:

1 - NEIGHBORHOOD PLAYGROUND PROPOSAL for area bounded by Wood-
side Expressway, E1 Camino Real, SP'Rai1road and Gemco parking
lot as suggested by Mr. Don Elliott, resident of the area:

Request was instigated by Mr. Don Elliott, resident of the ëfrea,
who had canvassed neighborhood and secured some private comitt-
rnents and pledges of contributions for a playground project for
the area and presented the idea to the City Manager who had
referred the matter to the Planning Dept. for further analysis
and findings before presentation to the P & R Commission.

Through .visual aids the area involved was noted -as being that
section of the City which included portions of Manzanita, Laur-
el, Willow, Charter, Hancock and, Shasta streets south -of Wood-
side Expressway between El Camino Real and the railroad; since
1964, the area has been zoned IR and ~CG although it still con-
tains a number of single family dwellings as well as some
duplexes and apartments; that area had been found to contain
approx. 100 families of approx. 272 people; five vacant pieces
of property were noted - varying in size from 15, 000 sq. .ft.
to 27,000 sq. ft., and varying in price for acquisition and
development from $24,000 to $44,000 (approx.) and suggestion
made that in view of fact that area is a non-resident zoned
area primarily that a park development should be anticipated
to be an interim use to serve the remaining residences in
the area.

Discussion which followed included: Comme.ndation to Mr. Elliott
and residents of the area for their interest and willingness
to contribute financially to such a project: that in view of
zoning it would be impractib1e to purchase property outright
and develop, but that an lIinstant parkll type of project could
possible be considered if land could be secured on a lease
basis, short term, and equipment used was of the type whi~h
could be moved to another location when there no longer was
a need for the area.

Chairman Whitmore appointed the following committee to dis-
cuss the project with Mr. Elliott: to explore the cost of
equipment, fencing, etc. for an lIinstant park" type project;
and to confer with the City Manager as to advisability of
proceeding to lease land on a short temm basis: Jim Williams,
chairman; Jack Stuart; Red Morton: and Pasco Balzarini.

.. -.- - .., - -, -.'
