J. BOURLAND - and a delegation from a Canada College class on the

J. ILl I.

environment proposed their developing of a small area of the H/H r/w
at corner of Park and Linden streets as a park for children of the
neighborhood, as part of a class project, their project to include
planting of lawn, trees, possibly some shrubs, after which the develop-
ment would need maintenance by the Park Dept. re cutting of lawns,
watering, etc. 'It was noted that a verbal commitment had been received
from the president of Sequoia Kiwanis Club, Mr. Bill Rhodes, for monies
to buy seed, etc.¡ that group-would have good student support¡ that
neighbors in the vicinity-had been contacted and were in favor of
their project; that this is a first semester environment class and
they wanted to develop a mini park¡ and requested Commission approval
before talki-ng to SF Water Dept. re getting surface rights for the area.

Chairman Whitmore complimented the group on their excellent idea and
noted there could be more of this type project but stated that there
were some complications involved -Park Dept. manpower shortage, legal
responsibilities involved, surface rights would probably be difficult
to secure by the group and so should be arranged through City, etc.

Commissioner Thompson moved to refer the matter to Park Dept. staff to
work with the college group, consult with other City staff members
regarding legal responsibilities, surface lease, etc., and to come in
with a proposed plan at the December meeting, seconded by Commissioner
Stuart, and passed. Commissioner Guida was noted absent. *(page 4,
paragraph 3, motion, Mr. Stuart included on committee.)

_AGE~A t.-- t.i te_ms ~fo:r: Jdisc~sl>si~n- _a_nd(or ~recommenda tion:

I - MINI PARKS - Jack A. Stuart
Mrs. Amy Simpson, and two others, inquired as to what progress is being
made for a park for this area? Mrs. Simpson was one of the principal
motivators of a ninety two signatures petition for a park-playground
for her area.

Commissioner Stuart explained commission involvement towards the
project -selection of the Palm-Regent site as appropriate and feasible¡
research of petition signers as to owners and tenants; investigation
into the most feasible approach for such a project and determination
that a land lease type project would be ,the most acceptable¡ cited the
matter of lack funds available¡ lack of park department personnel;
acknowledged that park badly needed for area; asked for citizen
support and assistance from the area-possible money contributions-
owner acceptance of lease idea, etc; noted that Commission still pro-
ceeding on matter.

~
