1.22

," ""..',

Commissioner Thompson referring to items re announcement board in
Marlin Park and verbal request re baseball field on Belmont School
land in Shores suggested these items be referred to staff. Chairman
Whitmore so directed. Mrs. Thompson asked when the Downtown Civic
Center Plan had been removed from CAB and was told -sometime in late
December.

Commissioner Stuart suggested various city groups should be encouraged
to attend Commission meetings and bring in new ideas.

Commissioner Terrill expressed indignation on the news story in the
R.C. Tribune re San Francisco.s proposal for private golf courses on
portions of its watershed properties and asked what the Commission
could do about getting a bid in for a golf course.

Chairman Whitmore said that as the matter is of urgency that the
Commission could take action tonight on a recommendation.

~

Discussion included that private golf courses with an underlying
profit motive would not permit widespread average-citizen use as
would publicly owned ones: that it was understood that city has for
some time had information and plans available for two golf courses
which would be applicable to the watershed property; that the Citizens
Committee to the Winans Report, Golf Committee should be re-activated
to assist on the project; that the Commission would be willing to meet
in Special Session to help in any way towards expediting and insuring
that Redwood City present its bid for one or two golf courses; that
public subscription could well be a way to fund any golf course project;
that timing is of critical importance and City action should be taken
immediately.

Commissioner Terrill moved to urgently recommend that Council move
immediately to become one of the bidders for at least one, and possibly
two, golf courses planned for the San Francisco watershed property,
seconded by Commissioner Knecht, and passed, by unanimous vote of- the
Commission.

Commissioner Stuart moved to recommend that the City involve the "Golf
Committee of the Citizens Committee to the Winans Report" (Ed Jacoubowsky,
chairman; James Knecht, P~rk & Recreation Commission representative),
along with the City Manager, Park & Recreation staff, and other city
staff as needed, in putting a package together for presenting a bi_d
for at least one, and possibly two, golf courses on the San Francisco
watershed property, seconded by Commissioner Terrill, and passed, by
unanimous vote of the Commission.

Commissioner Guida suggested that benches be placed near tree areas of

- -

baseball fields,to accommodate small youngsters during the up-coming
baseball season.

23 - ~DJOURNMENT - Meeting adjourned at 10:40 p.m.

DORIS C. THOMPSON, SECRETARY
REDWOOD CITY PARK & RECREATION COMMÅ’SSION
3 1971
