234

/II

Commissioner Weintraub asked about the new meeting area in the lobby of the Community
Activities Building for future Commission meetings. It was reported that a work order
would be submitted for this work and the area would be petitioned off as soon as work
schedules permitted.

Commissioner Rollins complimented the Parks & Recreation Deparbnent on their program
and, after indicating that he had checked with other cities, stated how far advanced
Redwood City was in respect to other programs. He went on to add that he hoped we could
create park areas that would be beautiful and survive generation after generation.
He a~ked about the possibilities of a police and sheriff's reserve, a program other cit-
ities have,':asa possible training ground for future employment. He mentioned the Sher-
iff's facility where trustees are held and wondered if these people could be utilized
by the Parks & Recreation Department in areas in which they are capable. Mr. Weeks
explained that there had been a program in which probationers were utilized; however,
recently the Department had to temporarily cease this program because of an injury
which occurred. Apparently there is no coverage for injury and the Personnel Depart-
ment is tr~ng at the present time to determine whose area of responsibility this is.
At this point the City cannot accept workman compensation responsibility for these
personnel.

Commissioner Rollins suggested taking an inventory of the skills of Senior Citizens
and setting up some sort of volunteer program. Supervisor Hartman mentioned the R.S.V.P.
(Retired Senior Volunteer Program. with is n~ in effect. ~o people hav~e~ hired
(one for Redwood City and one for Menlo Park) to organize and set up this program.
The Seniors will be used in libraries, schools, etc. Mr. Weeks mentioned that the
DeparbDent had utilized several Senior volunteers in September 1973 in the registration
process. They were very cooperative and worked out very well. The Department has been
working with the Senior Counseling and Information Service and will also take maximum
advantage of the new R.S.V.P. services.

Commissioner Knecht asked if the staff had presentations ready to gtve.Mr. Weeks
explained that one was always ready and each Commissioner should give the staff a call
and schedule the presentations when they so desire.

The Commissioner Guida mentioned the Community Park plans and the fact that Dickey Street
was a through street. Safety for children was expressed. Commissioner Knecht mo ed
to direct the staff to check the possibilities and feasibilities of abandoning Dickey
Street, seconded by Commissioner Weintraub.

Ayes:

Commissioners Guida, Haynes, Knecht, Pound, Rollins,
Schenck, and Weintraub

Nays:

None

Motion carried.

Mr. Weeks mentioned that he will be receiving copies of the full program for the league'
meetings which he will xerox and send to the Commission.
