In the spring, roving leaders would rotate among the <br />elementary schools conducting special interest programs for the students <br />of each school. This program would involve such interests as arts and <br />crafts, tumbling, drama, and a variety of city-wide special events. <br /> <br /> <br />This program concept is to organize and conduct sports and programs <br />independent of any school affiliation. Any child in Redwood City may sign <br />up for sports leagues and be .assigned to teams by Parks & Recreation <br />Department supervisory staff. Sports leaders would be hired and assigned to <br />coaching areas of interest (total sign-up numbers) dictates. <br /> <br />The program is being organized on an experimental basis and will be very <br />flexible. It will operate within current budget limitations and will be <br />evaluated on a regular basis throughout the coming year. <br /> <br />MOTION: <br /> <br />Commissioner Rollins moved to open the programs to all <br />interested students, regardless of age or grade, and that <br />the director of the program determine, by school grQups, <br />where the individual children will participate. <br /> <br />The motion died for lack of a secoRd. <br /> <br />MOTION: <br /> <br />Commissioner Aldrich moved that the age level for sign-ups <br />be equal and the same for boys as well as for girls, <br />seconded by Commissioner Weintraub. <br /> <br />The motion carried unanimously by voice vote. <br /> <br />MOTION: <br /> <br />Col1l1lissioner Wilson moved, seconded by Corrmissioner Pound, <br />to accept the report and proposed fall-wi,nter-spring program <br />as set forth in the staff report and to include equal age <br />levels for boys. and girls. signups. " <br /> <br />The motion carried unanimously by voice vote. <br /> <br />AGENDA ITEM 2 - Review and Discussion of Distribution of City.s Parks <br />and Recreation Facilities <br /> <br /> <br />Mr. Weeks pointed out the active park areas as shown on the Park Main- <br />tenance Map. All areas were flagged so as to distinguish those which are <br />developed and those which are undeveloped. Additionally, the street islands <br />and medians were designated as well as other specialty areas, such as the <br />Model Airplane Field, Marina, etc. It was pointed out that the department <br />performs a broad scope of maintenance activities on all of these various <br />areas indicated as well as the landscaped areas in the downtown develop- <br />ment and Civic Center area. <br /> <br />The Commission discussed the frustration with which they must deal when <br />considering the acquisition of new areas, knowing that there are no.funds <br />available for further expansion of the park system.
