,;

"

, has been delayed due to lack of funding and drought issues. There is
currently $144,000 in facility fees available for this project and it is
hoped this park would be built within 1-2 years. Additional funding is
available from the Capital Improvement Program.

Shannon Way Playground consists of 1.87 acres and will contain a play
area and equipment and a large lagoon overlook. There is $287,000
allocated for this development in the budget, but it has also been
delayed due to budget constraints and drought problems. Input from the
public was used in developing the plans and specifications for the site
and it is now ready to go out to bid.

Sandpiper Park is a 9.5 acre site which will include a 21,000 square foot
community center with a library, child care facilities" recreation
and meeting facilities, maintenance center and a police office. On the
site will be a softball field, soccer field and beach area. The only
funding available is $1.3 million from GID 1-64. In order for this
project to be fully developed, it is necessary that the City acquire a
commercially-zoned property currently owned by Redwood Shores Properties
Inc. which is adjacent to this site. This project does not have any plans
or specifications developed as of yet. Director Griffiths noted that it
will take considerable funds to bring the soil at Sandpiper Park up to a
level where it can sustain plant growth.

ITEM 2 - Reclaimed Water Usage

Director Griffiths reviewed with the audience the list of areas proposed
for No Watering during 1991 due to the drought and a list of areas
proposed for water with Reclaimed Water during 1991. He explained that a
group of people are currently working with the South Bayside System
Authority on a plan for using third stage water from the sewage treatment
plant to be used throughout the park system. Currently only second stage
water is used on medians and areas that have no public use. Reclaimed
water will be used on trees and shrubs within certain parks, and efforts
, will be made to keep trees alive wherever possible. Director Griffiths
said that a report will be taken to the City Council at their April 8
meeting regarding the water crisis and what effects it will have on the
parks. It will cost $12,000-13,000 per acre to re-seed or re-sod the
parks that we are unable to water. He explained those parks with high
water usage and limited/no recreational use by public were selected for
no watering during 1991. In order to eliminate potential IIdustll
problems, the parks selected for no watering will be treated with an
herbicide to eliminate grass and weeds and then will be mowed. Director
Griffiths explained that 14-15 acres of landscape in Redwood City are
proposed to receive no water during 1991 and 36 acres to receive
reclaimed water.

gues~ion and Answer Period
The following were comments/questions/suggestions made by the audience:

-There ;s only one basketball hoop in Redwood Shores and more are
necessary, especially for the older children and adults.

- ---,

, '
