She also <br />mentioned that in addition to the S~nior Center, the 4ger Annex Building is <br />utilized full time and all rooms are busy with classes. She felt that it is <br />a programming challenge to try to meet the needs of all the senior population <br />due to the age range of the seniors (ages 55-100). <br /> <br />Supervisor Oliver feels the Veterans Senior Center is very unique because of <br />the large number of senior organizations and clubs which meet at the Center <br />and are dedicated to major fund raising projects which allow the Center to be <br />moderately self-supporting. A Senior Advisory Council has been established <br />to make policies for the Center, in addition to making spending decisions. <br />She also sees the Veterans Senior Center as being risk takers, innovative and <br />creative because they offer such things as pet care clinics, senior bike club <br />and the Intergenerational Program. The Center has a strong partnership with <br />Canada College and Sequoia Hospital which enables the Center to offer many <br />different types of health screenings, Adaptive Physical Education classes, <br />and Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes. In addition, the Center offers a <br />fitness program which focuses on education, prevention and safety. <br />Supervisor Oliver teaches two free drop-in fitness classes herself. Both she <br />. and Supervisor Mary Kucala have made a commitment to keep the cost of classes <br />low for seniors because of their fixed incomes. The Center subsidizes the <br />cost of the lunch program and also pays for the salary of a part-time lunch <br />coordinator and programming staff hours. The Center is also raising funds to <br />help pay for the salaries of its instructors. ' <br /> <br />Supervisor Oliver is especially proud of the Intergenerational Program run in <br />conjunction with John Gill School which helps youngsters to become acquainted <br />with the senior population. Various types of computer classes are also <br />offered at the Center in addition to travel slide shows. <br /> <br />All the Commissioners commented on the programs offered at the Senior Center <br />and thanked Supervisor Oliver for her efforts and hard work. Supervisor <br />Oliver noted the following prioritized items needed by the Veterans Senior <br />Center: <br /> <br />1) More accessible transportation <br />2) Paid employee who could do case management <br />3) Evening facility aide <br /> <br />
