.

Committee Member Charles Greer felt the City has a need for more meeting
rooms and would like to see additional meeting rooms available at the new
center. He said the sub-committee was concerned that there be adequate
clearance in front of the bleachers and that there be proper signage
throughout the building.

Chairperson Davis said that all feedback and comments received from the 504
Committee have been forwarded to Architect Mark Schatz who has been very
sensitive to accessibility issues. Chairperson Davis asked the Committee if
there was any function that has not been identified or considered in the
proposed building. Ms. Jones-Thomas mentioned there should be adequate
wiring for TOO equipment in the new building in addition to proper signage
and visual alarms. She said she would like to see the new Red Morton Center
as multi-purpose as possible and have its uses be compatible for all ages and
disabilities.

Committee Member Jon Greenfield felt there should be more emphasis placed on
the parking facilities for the physically challenged and restroom
accessibility needs to be addressed. Ms. Jones-Thomas felt there ;s a need
to look beyond wheelchair users and it is necessary to sometimes go beyond
established building codes. Mr. Luce mentioned the 1980 census indicated
that 18% (or 11,600+ people)of Redwood City residents and 19% of San Mateo
County residents are disabled. Mr. Green mentioned installing a hard wired
system in addition to a pub11c address system in order to provide proper
amplification for the hearing impaired. Ms. Jones-Thomas said the
sub-committee expressed their official support of the construction of a new
Red Morton Center rather than a remodel of the existing facility. She
invited all Commissioners to attend the 504 Committee meetings which are held
the first Tuesday of each month at the 4ger Annex from 4:00-6:00pm.

The following items were taken out of order:
ITEM 3 - Study Session with City Council/Red Morton Center

Chairperson Davis said the Study Session with the City Council has been set
for Monday, May 3 at 7:00pm at the Library Community Room. He presented the
Commissioners with a draft summary of the Comrnission1s position on the new
Red Morton Center for their review. The Commissioners discussed the draft
and made a few changes regarding the concerns about additional staff offices
being included in the new center and the inclusion of craft programs such as
lapidary in the new center. Director Gr1ffiths said he needs to look at the
consolidation of administrative offices and future growth of the department.
It was recommended that an independent study be performed to determine if
relocation of the administrative offices to the new center is feasible.

Chairperson Davis mentioned there was a strong interest at the public hear1ng
to include the lapidary shop in the new center. The Commissioners referred
to Recreation Center Supervisor Jan Knight1s report regarding incompatibility
of lapidary at the Red Morton Center and felt it gave some good
justifications for not 1ncluding it in the new center. Superintendent
Hartman explained she met with the President and another member of the
Sequoia Gem and Mineral Society this week to discuss other options and
alternatives for the relocation of the lapidary shop. She said staff is
currently researching this matter and the possible consolidation of the
lapidary shop with Little House in Menlo Park. She stressed that the Sequoia
