Gem and Mineral Society and the Park and Recreation Department have a good
working relationship and the incompatibility issue comes from the fact the
lapidary shop is not compatible with the IImulti-useli concept of the new
Red Morton Center.

Commissioner Howard asked Mr. and Mrs. Skinner of the Sequoia Gem and Mineral
Society if their group would be willing to pay a fee for using the facilities
and they were receptive. She made a recommendation that the independent
study done regarding the relocation of administrative offices include looking
at space at the Community Activities Building, the Veterans Senior Center and
the Senior Center/4ger Annex for the lapidary shop. All the Commissioners
felt some accommodation should be made for the lapidary shop and its
relocation. Mr. Skinner felt the lapidary shop has always been compatible
with all programs held at Red Morton and was not aware of any problems. He
mentioned the club is willing to move their equipment to another space or
building and that the shop does not have to remain at the Red Morton Center.
Superintendent Hartman said there is an issue of space allotment and the type
of requirements the lapidary shop needs. She said exclusive use of space is
an issue because of the lack of space within the department. Mrs. Skinner
said the club wants to be able to have some accommodation to another location
and mentioned the club wants to update their equipment which would require
less energy, is less noisy and emits a less offensive smell. She said there
are lapidary shops in Hayward and San Francisco which have this modern
equipment and Commissioner Hordness said he was interested in visiting these
two lapidary shops. Mr. Skinner said he wanted to thank the.City of Redwood
City for their continuing generosity of supporting the lapidary shop. Mr.
and Mrs. Skinner were given a copy of Jan Knight's report and Chairperson
Davis suggested they respond to the the report in writing. Commissioner
Howard suggested the club prepare a report noting their future plans
including the possible purchase of new equipment.

ITEM 2 - Discussion of Gerry Letzring Memorial

Chairperson Davis said that Gerry Letzring was an active youth coach and that
he played an integral part in getting the 4ger playing fields returned to the
youth of Redwood City and felt it was fitting to establish a memorial to him
within the park system. He said several of the proposed memorials include
naming the gym complex. Kiwanis/Mitchell field complex. or new concession
stand in Gerry's honor. A perpetual trophy was also suggested. George
Blondino said Mr. Letzring spent 23 years working with Little League and
spent the last 2 years as a contributor to the new Little League complex. He
suggested placing Gerry's name on the new electronic scoreboard. a plaque on
the concession stand. or naming the complex in his honor. It was also
suggested naming the annual Little League City championship after Gerry with
a perpetual trophy to be established. Commissioner Hordness suggested
forming a sub-committee consisting of commission members and community
members to make a recommendation on a fitting memorial. Chairperson Davis
appointed Commissioners Hordness and Howard and George Blondino to serve on
this sub-committee.

ITEM 5 - Community Center/School Site Update

Director Griffiths reported a joint meeting of the Belmont School District
Facilities Committee and the City Council Facilities Committee has been set
for mid-May. He will continue to report on the progress of the project at
the next meeting.
