hopefully within a few months the necessary land will be acquired from
Redwood Shores Inc. and the selection of the project architect will begin.

Chairperson Davis asked when it would be necessary for the Commission to
provide their input on the project as well as hold public hearings for the
community. Director Griffiths said the public hearings will be held in the
Redwood Shores community regarding this project. He mentioned if the
Belmont School District decides not to participate in the project, the City still
intends to build a community center on the site which would be 6,000-7,000
square feet in size versus the planned joint community center / school of
12,500 square feet. Director Griffiths said he will keep the Commission
involved in the progress of the project.

ITEM 2 - LETZRING MEMORIAL UPDATE

Commissioner Nordness explained he has met with the committee several
times and they have developed a two-pronged approach to recognize Gerry
Letzring. He explained that since Gerry was instrumental in the renovation
of the Kiwanis/Mitchell Field complex, the committee felt it was appropriate
to name the complex the "Gerry Letzring Little League Complex". They have
also looked into placing the same signage on the scoreboard in a space
measuring 42"x 42". He and Bill Wooten have obtained prices of $284.00
from Sign-a-rama and $180.00 from ASD Inc. for the vinyl lettering which
would be attached to the scoreboard. The cost would include creating the
verbiage and installation of the lettering. Chairperson Davis suggested
placing the signage on a separate piece of metal which would then be attached
to the scoreboard. This piece could be replaced if necessary rather than
lettering that is placed on the sign. Director Griffiths suggested placing some
type of plastic coating on the lettering/ sign which could increase its life span.
He said he would be at the California Park and Recreation Conference in
February and would check with manufacturers at the show to see if they had
any recommendations.

Commissioner N ordness said the second part of the memorial would be
more of a legacy to the children. The committee has recommended placing a
granite memorial near the scorekeeper's box at Kiwanis Field which is where
the majority of the public enter into the complex. He explained the first
option the committee originally looked at was removing the wood
scorekeeper's box at Kiwanis Field and replacing it with a cement structure.
The estimates for the structure came in around $7,100 but would probably be
closer to $10,000 when it was completed. The committee felt that this option
was cost prohibitive and looked into option 2. He said that he and members
of the Letzring family went to Colma and looked at various types of granite
designs which could be used as a memorial stone. They received a quote
from Mark Fontana of V. Fontana & Company of $3,500-$4,650 for the stone,
plus $260.00 for installation. Mr. Fontana estimated it would take 4-5 weeks

- ""
- .c-,-
