The Commissioners discussed the
topic and felt it needed to be re-visited.

-Commissioner Nordness inquired about Center Coordinator Gonzalez's
report regarding the number of phone calls received by the Fair Oaks
Community Center. Director Griffiths said he would obtain the year end
telephone call report from Fair Oaks and forward to the Commission.
Commissioner Nordness also noted that Raychem donated 150 turkeys and
Trees R Us donated Christmas trees to needy families at the Fair Oaks
Community Center. He also mentioned that 15.0 seniors were served
Thanksgiving Dinner by the Peninsula Hills Women's Club.

-Commissioner Morton asked the Commissioners for their assistance and
guidance of a problem that he has noted with the gymnasium floors at
McKinley and Kennedy Middle Schools. In working with Assistant
Recreation Center Supervisor Mike Blondino with the basketball programs,
he noted that the gym floors of both schools are not maintained and have
been neglected and he is very worried about the safety aspect of students using
these facilities for City-sponsored programs. He wondered if a request could
be made to the School District to have them purchase tarps to protect their
gym floors. Director Griffiths explained that the City and the School District
had a reciprocal agreement for many years but since Proposition 13, the
School District's Maintenance Department has not been very responsive to
any of our requests. He suggested having Supervisor Blondino send a letter
to the Superintendent Crates regarding the safety and maintenance issue of
the floors. He also said he spoke with Kennedy School Prihcipal John Brand
recently regarding meeting with Park Supervisor Mike Gibbons and Don Diaz
regarding landscape concerns at his school. Director Griffiths said that at one
time the City considered assuming the maintenance of all school fields but
there were many problems associated with this suggestion. At this time, the
Parks and Recreation Department has completed the renovation of various
school fields and the preparation of all of the school fields each year for Little
League season.

-

-Commissioner Nordness said he received a couple of phone calls regarding
the recent graffiti problem and turf damage at Stafford Park. He asked about
having a chain installed at Stafford to prevent people from driving over the
lawn to transport their picnic equipment.

The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was adjourned
at 9:40pm to be reconvened at 7:30pm on Wednesday, February 23, 1994 at the
Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City,
California.

, ~ .-:' .:

.
