suggested sending a letter of thanks to the staff of M&M Nursery for calling
the Police Department and alerting them to the theft. Mr. Aguilar also noted
the Commissioners may receive questions regarding the expenditure of the
$15,000 allocated for the Cultural Resources Management Plan for Union
Cemetery. They were given a detailed breakdown of how the funds were
expended and the balance remaining.

ITEM 1 - RED MORTON CENTER UPDATE

Project Architect Mark Schatz gave the Commissioners a progress report on
the new Red Morton Center and explained that yesterday the Steering
Committee completed the "design development work" for the project. The
next step will be to get construction estimates to determine if the project is
within budget. He said the committee needed to cut $400,000 in construction
costs and they achieved this goal at yesterday's meeting which was done by
simplifying and developing alternative systems. Within the next
2 1/2 weeks, an interior furnishings budget will be developed.

Commissioner Davis inquired about the Commission having a fund raising
activity to help offset some of the costs of the new Red Morton Center. Mr.
Schatz indicated that within the next three weeks he will know for the
estimated amount of funds needed for the project. He said that by having the
community participate in the fund raising project, they will have a real sense
of ownership of the new center. He estimated that between $100,0000-200,000
would be needed to be raised. He mentioned that Civic Cultural
Commissioner Tamara Piulle came to the Steering Committee meeting and
was interested in having some type of public art be included in the new center
and he felt this was a good idea.

Mr. Schatz showed the model of the new Red Morton Center and said it was
on display at the CPRS Conference in Anaheim earlier this month. He spoke
about the approval process the project has been following and said they were
able to respond to all of the concerns and demands of the neighbors on King-
Street. The parking concerns were taken care of by using the parking lot of
the CAB as overflow parking for the new center. He estimated that the
project would go out to bid in late June or early July and that demolition
would begin in September. Construction of the new center will take between
15 to 18 months to be completed. After demolition of the old center, four feet
of soil will have to be excavated from the site and the area will need to be re-
filled with different soil. He noted that the floor problems that exist at the
current Red Morton Center are due to the poor soil located under the
building.

Commissioner Davis thanked Mr. Schatz for the outstanding job he has done
on the Red Morton Center project and felt that we should look at local artists
and the new Art Center for art work at the new center.

'J, '.,',

.
, ','.!'{ .::,",
