ITEM 3 - REDWOOD SHORES TENNIS CLUB

Commissioner N ordness explained that he contacted the United Tennis
Association and received information on their National Junior Tennis
League program. He asked if the Red wood Shores Tennis Club would
consider being involved with training young people in the community how
to play tennis.

Michael Garb of the Redwood Shores Tennis Club (RSTC) 'explained that their
group previously held tournaments for an entire weekend and required the
exclusive use of both Shorebird and Dolphin Courts. This year RSTC has
changed their tournament format and will hold their tournaments only on
Saturday or Sunday, and on three dates will only require the use of Shorebird.
He explained that the 1993 membership totals of the RSTC were 104 and 66
people are Redwood City residents. The annual dues are $25.00 for
individuals who are residents, $35.00 for individuals who are non-residents,
$35.00 for families who are residents, and $45.00 for families who are non-
residents. The annual dues are used to pay for club socials, tournament prizes
and equipment. During 1994, the RSTC has made the requirement that new
members must be Redwood City residents and all tournaments are for
members only.

Mr. Garb reviewed the eleven (11) dates requested by the RSTC for their
tournament schedule. He also mentioned that in his letter to Director
Griffiths, the RSTC would be willing to donate two benches to be placed .at
Shorebird Park near the tennis courts. Commissioner Morton asked if the
RSTC would be willing to pay a rental fee for the use of the tennis courts. Mr.
Shoots of RSTC said he thought the tennis club would be willing to pay a
rental fee.

Commissioner Slusser said he reviewed the previous years' activities and~
agreements with the RSTC. He said after reviewing this information, and
with the reduced activities schedule of RSTC this year, he did not find this
year's request unreasonable. He mentioned that in previous years, he and
former Commissioner Mortensen made random checks at each of the courts
prior to the tournaments to make sure the signs were posted and found the
signs to be in place each time they were checked.

Dan Calic, a former Redwood Shores resident and RSTC member, spoke
about a couple of incidents that occurred this past year between the group of
tennis players he plays with and the RSTC. He said signage announcing the
tournaments were not posted and they were forced off the tennis courts in the
middle of play by members of the RSTC. Mr. Calic said he was not at the
meeting to protest the RSTC being able to have tournaments but was looking
for some sort of change in the rules to assure that confrontations would not
occur. He asked that someone from RSTC be at the courts early on the day of
