Director Griffiths
said he also received a similar letter from Mrs. Little and he sent her a reply
today. He explained that due to the construction of the Jefferson Avenue
Underpass Project, the roadway will be running through this piece of property
and it would not be practical to landscape it at this time. He said the
Underpass Project also will include landscaping plans and he will take her
suggestions into consideration when reviewing those plans. He also referred
her to Joel Patterson and Curt Luck of the Community Development
Department to answer the other questions in her letter.

ITEM 1 - ADULT SPORTS FEES

Recreation Supervisor Bill Wooten said that based on the request of the Park
and Recreation Commission at their April meeting, he conducted a survey of
other cities on the Peninsula to determine what they charged for adult soccer
field usage and the results of the survey were given to the Commissioners for
their review. He explained that with the exception of Palo Alto, South San
Francisco and Redwood City, who each have large adult soccer programs, the
other cities do not have adult soccer programs or have very small programs.
All surveyed cities offer youth soccer and a few of the cities charge the youth
soccer leagues for field usage. Redwood City provides its fields free of charge
to thee YSA and A YSO youth soccer leagues and also to the ad ul t soccer
teams. Palo Alto, South San Francisco and San Mateo each charge their adult
soccer leagues on either an hourly basis or a per team basis.

Supervisor Wooten explained that adult soccer is played almost year around
and Hoover field are closed from November to March each year for
renovation. He stated it costs between $1,500.00 and $2,000.00 to renovate the
fields each year and he is considering charging Redwood City adult soccer
teams beginning in September. The proposed fee could range between $5.00-
$10.00 per team per game which would help offset the costs of field
renovation. Supervisor Wooten said the department would control the goal
posts but the scheduling and administration of the adult soccer leagues would
remain with Mr. Villa of Club Unidas. He felt that by charging a fee, it may
cut down on the amount of adult soccer field usage at Hoover Park and thus
red uce the amount of field maintenance. The Commissioners discussed
providing other services such as lining the fields and scheduling but found it
cost prohibitive.

Commissioner Morton brought in a newspaper article regarding the size of
Burlingame's Park and Recreation budget and the amount of fees they

','. .
-"-,. ~.'~_u .....~_.
