r

..

collected and wanted to know how this compares to Redwood City's. Director
Griffiths said he will provide the Commissioners ,with the budget figures for
our Department's Park and Recreation sub-programs to provide a

.
com parlson.

Supervisor Wooten noted that adult drop-in soccer players are a problem at
the ballfields because they try to use them at the same time that youth and
adult softball games are being played and he would like to be able to control
the drop-in players. The Commissioners asked Supervisor Wooten to
develop a proposed fee schedule for adult soccer teams which would be
p resen ted at the June meeting.

Management Analyst Ramon Aguilar said he updated the tennis court
survey of Peninsula cities he did three years ago and found that the cities that
were charging for tennis court usage are still charging. In addition, their
tennis court charges have gone up an average of 30% since his last survey. He
stated the agencies that charge have tennis court complexes which are sub-
contracted out and that city receives a portion of the profits. Mr. Aguilar
mentioned this would be difficult for Redwood City to do since our tennis
courts are scattered allover the city and there would be no way to collect and
monitor the program. It was noted that Burlingame has meters for its tennis
court lights but has had many problems with vandalism of the meters and as
a result, the program is losing money.

ITEM 2 - RED MORTON CENTER UPDATE

Commissioner Howard said she spoke with Recreation Supervisor Julie
Hannon to obtain an update from the last Red Morton Steering Committee
meeting. She indicated there would be an approximate shortfall of $185,000-
$200,000 on the project which the Commission has made as their fund raising
goal. Ground breaking is estimated to begin in September and the approval of
the plans and specifications and call for bids should come before the City
Council in June.

Supervisor Hannon provided a "Wish List" for the new Red Morton Center
to give the Commissioners an idea what equipment is needed and the funds
required.

The Commissioners discussed different methods of fund raising and the need
to formulate a "plan of action". Chairperson Swope asked the
Commissioners to come up with ideas for the fund raising process and to give
them to the members of the Fund Raising Sub-Committee (Howard, Morton,
Davis). It was suggested that the sub-committee meet with Supervisor
Hannon and Architect Mark Schatz to help develop the action plan.
