<br />.. <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />She introduced Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor Adilah Haqq-Smith <br />who is responsible for the youth and middle school sports programs and who <br />will be in charge of this new program. Supervisor Haqq-Smith gave the <br />Commissioners a proposed five year plan for the Redwood City Youth <br />Advisory Council and reviewed it with them. She noted that when the <br />members of the council have been selected, they will review and revise the <br />proposed plan. She stated she wants students from diverse backgrounds to <br />participate on the board and as at-large members. Supervisor Haqq-Smith has <br />contacts at the middle schools and high schools and has been talking to teens <br />to get them involved in the new Red Morton Center and on a youth advisory <br />council. She is also a member of the Youth and Teens Roundtable Services <br />(YTRS) for CPRS, District IV and is surveying other cities to see how their <br />youth advisory councils work. <br /> <br />Commissioner Nordness said that he had done research on the concept of a <br />youth advisory council in Redwood City and had surveyed many cities about <br />their councils and felt it was a worthwhile program. Supervisor Haqq-Smith <br />said she envisioned high school students mentoring middle school students <br />in the program and estimated that there would be 11-13 representatives from <br />the various schools on the board. Board members would have one year <br />terms with members-at-Iarge and meetings would be open to all students. <br />Sub-committees would also be formed for various matters which came before <br />the youth advisory council. Supervisor Haqq-Smith said she would be <br />working with the principalsl vice principals and activities directors from the <br />schools and plans to work together with the school districts on this program. <br />Commissioner Davis suggesting finding a way to include Redwood City <br />students who attend private or parochial schools. <br /> <br />The Commissioners thanked Supervisor Haqq-Smith for her work on this <br />program and gave her their support. <br /> <br />ITEM 2 - RED MORTON CENTER UPDATE <br /> <br />-Commissioner Davis's letter regarding revenues and fees for the new Red <br />Morton Center <br />Commissioner Davis said his letter was meant to bring several matters to the <br />Commission's attention regarding the proposed revenues and fees for the <br />new Red Morton Center. He suggested forming a sub-committee to research <br />and discuss the matter further. <br /> <br />Director Griffiths said he spoke with the City Manager who has indicated that <br />the revenue and fee matter is being referred back to the Park and Recreation <br />Commission for further discussion and recommendation. He said the <br />Commission may want to look at increasing non-resident fees with a <br />corresponding decrease in resident fees.
