.1

.

It

",

...

the department would like to use any remaining project funds to provide
scholarships for youth. He said staff will begin moving in to the new facility
after January 1 and announced there will be an Open House for City staff on
J an uary 19 from 3-6pm and a Grand Opening to the pub lie on J an uary 20 from
10am-4pm. All of this is dependent on the construction being finished
according to schedule.

The Commissioners suggested sending out invitations to all contributors and
future contributors to a special tour of the new facility. The Commissioners
will provide the department with names of people who will need to be
invited. Commissioner Slusser suggested having a private reception for
those contributors before the regular Open House event. It was suggested to
sell pavers and tiles at the Open House on January 20. The Commissioners
all volunteered to help at the Open House.

ITEM 2 - BELMONT SCHOOL DISTRICT-SANDPIPER PARK UPDATE

Director Griffiths reported that during October, the Belmont School District
advised the Project Committee that they do not have the funds available to
proceed with the Sandpiper Project. He explained the joint use agreement
which was developed and signed by both the City and the School District to
share costs for building and maintaining the site. The lease payment paid by
the School District was to be used to pay for the operation of the community
center for the first ten to twelve years after completion. The Belmont School
District is now looking for alternative ways to complete the project such as
down-sizing the facility, putting in modular units, and building the project in
phases. Director Griffiths said he was not sure if the City's building standards
would allow of the installation of modulars on the site. The Commissioners
discussed the fact that in 1987 the Belmont School District sold a piece of
property in Redwood Shores for $3.2 million to a private developer for new
houses. This property had been given to the Belmont School District by
Redwood Shores Inc. for the purpose of building a school in Redwood Shores.
Director Griffiths said the Sandpiper Project will be discussed by the City
Council in Executive Session on November 27.

ITEM 3 - DISCUSSION OF WORKPLAN PRESENTATION TO CITY
COUNCIL

Chairperson Swope reviewed the workplan presentation she made on behalf
of the Commission to the City Council.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

-Commissioner Nordness reported that Redwood City International received
a generous grant from the Civic Cultural Commission to assist with the two
performances of the Chinese delegation in October. He stated over 400 people
