i

')

The Commissioners decided they would like to have them come for the April
meeting.

-Chairperson Swope noted that Commissioner Nordness has been helping
out at the Red Morton Center and said that Supervisor Julie Hannon really
appreciated his assistance. Commissioner Nordness said working at there has
given him great admiration for the staff at Red Morton.

ITEM 1- MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS AND YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor Adilah Haqq-Smith announced that
this year, middle school sports athletic coordinators have been hired at both
Kennedy and McKinley which has given her the ability to .be more accessible
to the program. Both schools were concerned that with the conception of
magnet schools, that there was not going to be enough space available for
students to participate. Both she and Supervisor Hannon met with School
Superintendent Ron Crates regarding this issue and as a result, the School
District gave them $8,000 to expand the program. The league can now
accommodate all students who want to participate and no one is cut from the
league. Last year, several coaches did not return and new coaches were hired
to replace them. McKinley has three teachers involved in the league this year
where previously they only had one. All coaches training is done in-house
due to budget constraints. This is the first year McKinley has had a 6th grade
A & B basketball team and a 6th grade volleyball team to make the playoffs.
The league includes volleyball, basketball and has just added girls' soccer
team to Kennedy. The track team is a joint team which includes students
from all Redwood City schools.

Supervisor Haqq-Smith announced an informational meeting for the Youth
Advisory Council will be held on April 4 from 6-7pm at Red Morton Center.
Students ages 13-18 are invited to attend. She said a Youth Conference will be
held April 20-21 at Red Morton Center. All City Council and Commissioners
are invited to attend. The guest speakers will be San Mateo Councilmember
Claire Mack and Supervisor Ted Lempert. Tickets are $33.00 each.

She announced Red Morton Center has over 200 teen memberships which
gives teens access to the Teen Center, the gym and special events. The special
events include movies, sports tournaments and dances. A "Casino Night and
Dance" is planned for May 11 from 7-10pm at the Center. Supervisor Haqq-
Smith noted she has hired four new staff people to work in the Teen Center
to provide supervision.

Supervisor Haqq-Smith said the biggest problem at the Center is "tagging"
(graffiti) done by teens. Many people hang outside the front doors and smoke
which is something the staff is trying to change. There have been a few
instances of youth being "jumped" on streets near the Center but not on City
