Acting Superintendent Gibbons explained that large branches of these eucalyptus trees had fallen into adjacent neighbors' yards and that the City felt there was a liability issue and the trees were removed in accordance with City Council action. Ms. Benesch said she wants to have the grove of trees at Garrett Park declared heritage trees in order to protect them from being removed in the future. Chairperson Truscelli requested that this matter will be placed on the January agenda for further discussion. All Commissioners were asked to review the Heritage Tree Ordinance before the January meeting. Acting Superintendent Gibbons announced that 38 trees will be fe-planted in the Spring of 1997 to reF lace the trees which were removed (2 trees for every tree removed). Commissioner Davis felt that the Commission could not do anything about what has happened in the past but that the Commission could do something about the future. ITEM 1- SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION PRESENTATION Senior Affairs Chairperson Geary Lloyd spoke about the role of the Senior Affairs Commission in the community. He discussed a senior survey the Commission did in 1993 and stated the results of the survey helped the Commission develop their workplan. In FY95-96, the Commission focused on the following issues: housing, education of seniors on senior issues, making recommendations to BFI and the City's Water Department on lifeline rates for seniors, elder abuse, health care, transportation, peer counseling, and consumer watch. In FY96-97, the Senior Affairs Commission has two representatives on the Redwood City Elementary Facilities Advisory Committee and a representative on Youth Commission for San Mateo County. The Senior Affairs Commission is also war king on many issues including public safety and housing rehabilitation loans for seniors. Commissioner Davis asked if there was anything the Park and Recreation Commission could do in the way of joint activities or cooperative efforts. Chairperson Lloyd said having the swimming pools open in the evenings for senior exercise programs would be helpful. Many of the Commissioners advised Chairperson Lloyd they would be willing to help with any projects the Senior Affairs Commission is involved in. Commissioner Hughes invited Chairperson Lloyd to participate in the development of the teen center component in the Redwood Shores Community Center and he accepted. ITEM 2.
