Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of February 26, 1997

Page 2

park in Redwood Shores. One site they visited was a piece of City-owned
property near the Indian Creek Apartments (Site #1). Site #1 is a four acre
site near the Indian Creek Apartments and also has adjoining neighbors. In
addition, the site would need to be fenced and parking would be an issue
because of the red curb parking restrictions and the closeness to the bridge. A
parking lot would need to be developed on the property for the dog park
users. Director Griffiths announced that since that meeting, three additional
sites have been identified.

Site #2 is near the water tank on Redwood Shores Parkway between the
Sand piper Subdivision and is on the property for the new Fire Station.
Although most of the property is being developed for the Fire Station project,
there would be adequate property remaining for a dog park behind the Fire
Station. One of the disadvantages to the property is that it has adjoining
neighbors which may object to a development of a dog park.

Site #3 is located at Water Tank #1 behind the Pacific Athletic Club. The site
is fenced and landscaped but has some topographic problems such as steep
hillsides which are not conducive to a good dog park. Director Griffiths felt
the site was too small and parking would be a problem. In addition, the
Public Works Services Department has indicated that many "regulatory
issues" would arise since the site is an active reservior site. Site #3 also has
several adjoining neighborhoods which would probably oppose the dog site.

Site #4 is owned by Redwood Shores Inc. and is part of the Twin Dolphin/
Whipple Avenue connector behind the Pacific Athletic Club and is adjacent
to Site #3. This property is a vacant, level lot and does not have adjoining
neighbors. There is also fencing at the site and water could be secured from
the City from the water tank at nearby Site #3. Director Griffiths stated he has
spoken to Don Warren about this property and asked him to approach the
Board of Directors of Redwood Shores, Inc. to determine if they would be
interested in leasing this approximate 3/4 acre piece of property to the Shores
Dog group. He noted that Don Warren is now a consultant for Redwood
Shores Inc. and is no longer employed by that firm.

Terry Anderlini advised the Commission he has a list of 148 people who
have signed a petition asking for a dog park in Redwood Shores and he
mentioned that he has another 40 signatures to come. He said the "Shores
Dogs" group was formed and feels it is their responsibility to educate all dog
owners and are very interested in helping develop this project. He also
mentioned that the group is also interested in raising funds and obtaining
corpora te sponsors to assist in the funding of the project.

Rebecca Theis of Shores Dogs presented a proposal to the Commission which
consisted of two phases. Phase I includes the proposal to open one public
