Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of February 26, 1997

Page 3

,,',

~r'
~' ,

~'
,t' I

park for dog owners to exercise their animals I specifically Mariner Park.
During this interim period, dogs must be on leash or under voice command
at all times while visiting the park. Owners will be required to clean-up after
their dogs. It was also requested that proper refuse receptacles be installed at
Mariner Park, and in frequent, strategic locations throughout Redwood
Shores so that dog owners can properly clean-up after their dogs. Phase IT will
commence simultaneously with Phase I and will include establishing a
steering committee to work with the Park and Recreation Commission to
move the concept forward to the final building of a dog exercise area in
Redwood Shores.

~:.
r:',"

,-

í:'
,

Ms. Theis stated the reasons for having a dog park in Redwood Shores were:
to enhance harmony in the community; to have an area way from the
general population where dogs can exercise and socialize; and for the health
and well-being of dogs in the community. She felt a minimum of 1/2 acre of
land would be needed for a dog park and parking for vehicles. She also stated
that Shores Dogs is interested in seeking community /corporate funding and
in- kind donations for the project. Shores Dogs is very interested in becoming
a model for other cities to follow.

One of the Shores Dogs members spoke about the activity at the dog park in
Belmont and noted there were no actual dog fights and that participants are
self-policing and do clean up after their pets.

Commissioner Nordness asked Director Griffiths about the budget
requirements for a dog exercise area and Director Griffiths mentioned that the
parcel of land that he has spoken to Don Warren about (Site #3), is already
fenced, parking is available behind the Pacific Athletic Club, and water can
easily be brought to the site so the costs would be minimal. Mr. Ander lini
said Shores Dogs is interested in raising funds to make the site aesthetically
pleasing by installing landscaping and other amenities. He asked when
everyone could meet and look at the site.

Mary Parden President of the Redwood Shores Owners Association (RSOA)
explained that RSOA and the Shores Business Association each have
responsibility over different geographic area of the Redwood Shores
community. RSOA has 3,200 members and has architectural control and
strict CCR usage over its specific area. She stated that two of the proposed
sites are within the RSOA area and that the RSOA CC&R1s do not allow for a
dog park. Ms. Parden explained that in order to build the new school and
community center at Sandpiper Park, the City of Redwood had to pay
$25,000.00 to amend the RSOA's CC&Rs. She encouraged the Commissioners
to consider this matter, and be aware of the current restrictions.
Commissioner Slusser confirmed that a precedent had been set at Sandpiper
and that it should be considered in the development of a dog park.

,<;/

, ,:
.):i,

" ,':'~~i
'.
