Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of February 26, 1997

Page 4

ITEM 3 - REDWOOD SHORES COMMUNITY CENTER AND SANDPIPER
PARK UPD ATE

Chairperson Truscelli and Commissioner N ordness commented on the nice
ground breaking ceremony at Sandpiper on February 10.

Director Griffiths stated that Project Report #6 was given to the
Commissioners this evening. He reported the modulars will be installed on
the site by the end of April and that the sand-based playing field will be
completed prior to August. Because the field has a 90 day maintenance
period, it would probably not be available for use until the Spring.
Commissioner Davis felt the field should be for soccer only and registered his
opposition for having a general playing field. He felt that there are already
several softball fields and that there needed to be a designated soccer field for
the community.

Mary Parden suggested contacting the editor of "The Pilot" to clarify
misleading information that had appeared in a recent article about the new
school/community center. She suggested educating the Redwood Shores
residents through liThe Pilot" publication since it has a readership of
approximately 5,000 Redwood Shores residents. Commissioner Slusser will
review the article and will contact the editor of liThe Pilot" to clarify the
article in order to re-educate the community on the project.

Director Griffiths announced the City Council approved $89,000.00 in change
orders to the project, and as a result, many things which had been removed
from the project will be added back in. Director Griffiths gave all the
Commissioners a copy of the change orders by way of a City Council report.
Commissioner N ordness also expressed his disappointment that the playing
field at Sandpiper is not a soccerfield. Commissioner Davis asked Ms. Parden
what the Redwood Shores community is expecting from the new community
center and she responded that overall there is a great feeling about the facility
but it is a very diverse community with different needs and expectations.

ITEM 4 - PLANS FOR CITY COUNCIL PARK TOUR - MAY 17, 1997

Commissioner Davis reported the sub-committee will report at the March
meeting on the proposed agenda for the tour.

ITEM 5 -UPDATE ON RED MORTON CENTER ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATION AND TAPESTRY DEDICATION

Commissioner Nordness reported the anniversary celebration and tapestry
dedication will be this Saturday, March 1 at 1:00pm. He reviewed the
program and the featured speakers. A press release has been sent to the
