Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of January 28,1998

Page 2

as having some minor maintenance issues, but the slide was not recommended
for removal at that time. Manager Gibbons reported that the slide is structurally
sound although it does not meet current safety guidelines. Staff will provide a
report on this issue to the Commission and it will be discussed at the February
meeti ng.

ITEM 1 - POSTPONEMENT OF ELECTION OF OFFICERS

-Discussion of possible consolidation of commissions
Superintendent Hover said staff is looking at re-structuring the four commissions
that are the responsibility of this department. He mentioned this matter is being
reviewed by staff and asked if Chairperson Truscelli would consider extending
her term as chairperson for a few more months.

M/S Swope/Slusser: To postpone the election of officers until May.

The Commissioners discussed the concept of combining commissions within the
department to form one large commission with several sub-committees.
Commissioner Davis said he did not want to revise the structure of the
commissions for staff convenience; he did not want to dilute the focus of the
commission; didn't want to meet every week; he wants to see if it really makes
sense to combine commissions. Commissioner Slusser felt there could be a
potential synergy of combining commissions; that we may be forced to consider
consolidation due to the lack of volunteerism in the community; and the
Commission needs to take time to think through the end result.

Motion passed unanimously.

ITEM 2 -ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM UPDATE

Commissioner Davis reported that he, Manager Mike Gibbons, and Volunteer
Coordinator Sherene Saberi-Cortez made a presentation to the Redwood Oaks
Neighborhood Association about the Adopt-A Park program. Fleishman Park
has been selected as a pilot site for the program. The Redwood Oaks
Neighborhood Association invited the committee to their next meeting on
February 3 to discuss this program further.

ITEM 3 - DOG EXERCISE AREA UPDATE

Superintendent Hover said SBSA is still reviewing their strategic plan to
determine if the dog exercise area can be established on their property.
Commissioner Davis asked if there was another piece of property on the Hetch-
Hetchy which could be used for this purpose.

ITEM 4 - HERITAGE TREE ORDINANCE REVISION UPDATE

Superintendent Hover reported that he received responses from three
Commissioners. A meeting with the management staff of the Public Works
Department is planned for next week and this issue will be brought up.
Commissioner Davis noted he attended the Task Force meeting on trees and
sidewalks.

The meeting was recessed at 7:50pm.
