<br /> <br />PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION <br />MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1999 <br /> <br />.'.': <br /> <br />," <br /> <br />r.: <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Morton, Commissioners Davis, <br />La Berge, Slusser, Swope, and Truscelli <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioners Joseph <br /> <br />GUESTS PRESENT: Youth Advisory Council members Amy Griffin, Eboni <br />Hudson, Megan O'Sullivan, Dan Robelo, Jessica Shaffer, <br />Alixandria Williams, Susie Peyton, Kate Harr <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Gary Hover, Assistant Recreation <br />Supervisor Adilah Haqq-Smith, Administrative Assistant <br />Denise Monroe <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was called to order <br />by Chairperso n Vie Morton at 7: 31 pm in Room 4 of the Red Morton Center, 1120 <br />Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />The minutes of the January meeting were approved as mailed. <br />CORRESPONDENCE <br /> <br />The Commission has begun receiving newsletters from the Santa Clara Valley <br />Audibon Society. Copies are available for the Commissioners' review. <br /> <br />ITEM 1 - DISCUSSION WITH YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL (Y AC) <br /> <br />Members of the Youth Advisory Council were introduced to the Commission. <br />Five of the members are from Woodside High School and one is from Sacred <br />Heart Preparatory in Menlo Park. Y AC member Eboni Hudson gave an update <br />on the teen house and indicated they are interested in a site for high school <br />students only (ages 14 to 19). The current teen center at Red Morton accepts <br />students as young as 11 years old which is quite an age difference. The teen <br />house would be open later in the evenings and would offer talent shows, local <br />performers (music as well as poetry readings), smoothies and coffee drinks. <br />Contact has been made with Paradise Island and Mimi's Café, both located <br />downtown, to see if a joint venture could be explored. Entry to the teen house <br />would only be permitted to teens possessing a high school identification card; no <br />one older or younger would be allowed to enter. <br /> <br />Supervisor Haqq-Smith gave an update on the skateboard park. She noted that <br />a temporary location in the parking lot at Red Morton is being investigated and <br />hopefully will be set up by spring break; Y AC is still looking for a temporary and a <br />permanent location for the skateboard park. <br /> <br />Y AC member Amy Griffin reported the Y AC is planning a four high school dance <br />(Sequoia, Woodside, Carlmont, Menlo.Atherton) on April 9th at the Red Morton <br />Center Gym from 8:00pm-12midnight. They would like to have one of the <br />leadership groups from one of the high schools sell refreshments at the event as <br /> <br />
