Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of February 24, 1999

Page 2

,
,.
~<

a fund raiser for their group. Tickets will be pre-sold and also sold at the door.
Contact is being made with each of the high schools to promote the event;
posters will be hung and daily announcements made at each school to advertise
the event.

Supervisor Haqq-Smith reported that the Y AC will be participating in the 4th
Annual Youth Gathering to be held in Foster City in April. Redwood City will be
hosting three workshops at the event which expects over 200 students to attend
representing 29 to 30 cities in the area.

The Commissioners discussed what role they felt the Y AC should play and most
of the Commissioners felt that the YAC should continue to provide feedback to
the Commission on teen needs and concerns, and what can be done to make
our facilities more useful to teens.

The Commissioners and Y AC members spoke about the location for a teen
house and felt it should be located in downtown Redwood City. Y AC members
spoke about the teen houses in San Mateo and Palo Alto. Chairperson Morton
asked if the Commission could be provided with some literature about the
operation of other teen houses. Commissioner Slusser said the Commission can
present matters to the City Council on behalf of the Y AC and felt the Y AC could
be advisors to the Commission like the Commission is to the Council.

Supervisor Haqq-Smith stated she is trying to recruit students from other high
schools to participate on the Y AC and she is visiting campuses to meet this goal.
Each Y AC member is on a different sub-committee to research teen issues;
goals have been developed for each sub-committee. The Y AC would like to
establish a yearly spring dance for the local high school students. This year the
Y AC is trying to build a foundation for the future.

The group spoke about possible sites for the skateboard park. Chairperson
Morton suggested forming an ad hoc committee to look at possible skateboard
park sites.

Commissioner Davis suggested that one YAC member, on a rotational basis,
attend the monthly Park and Recreation Commission meetings to provide an
update on teen activities and projects. This update could be placed as the first
agenda item. Supervisor Haqq-Smith invited the Commissioners to attend the
Y AC meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:45pm at Red
Morton Center. Chairperson Morton thanked the Y AC members for coming to
the meeting and sharing information with the Commission.

ITEM 2 - STULSAFT PARK UPDATE

Susie Peyton and Kate Harr presented a plaque to Commissioner Truscelli and
her husband Vince to thank them for the spaghetti fundraising dinner they
sponsored last September.

Superintendent Hover advised the Commission that Council approved an
agreement for Subsurface Consultants to develop a work plan to remediate
Stulsaft Park. He noted that two meetings have been held; one with the
community group which included Chairperson Morton or Commissioner Davis.
the other meeting had representatives from 17 people from State, Federal and
