Superintendent Hover noted that the U.S. <br />Geological Survey may be able to get Stanford University to perform testing of <br />the site that could lower costs. The consultant will be doing interviews with <br />members of the public including anyone who has contacted our office about the <br />mercury issue. The Commissioners discussed using the Park and Recreation <br />Commission meetings as a forum to provide the public with updates on the <br />project; the newsletter published by Susie Peyton was also noted as a way to <br />provide updates. A fact sheet is being developed by the consultant to get <br />information out to the public. <br /> <br />Superintendent Hover spoke about touring the New Almaden Valley Park in <br />Santa Clara County which also had an issue with mercury remediation. He also <br />shared the timeline in the remediation of Stulsaft Park with the Commissioners. <br />Chairperson Morton said he was pleased with staff, the information provided and <br />was glad that members of the community were included on the committees. <br />Su perintendent Hover stated that the Cou nty will assu me the role of the lead <br />agency on property outside of the park. <br /> <br />¡" . <br /> <br />ITEM 3 - ORDINANCE APPROVAL - ALCOHOL IN THE PARKS <br /> <br />Su perintendent Hover stated the City Attorney has confirmed that State law <br />supersedes City ordinance; we cannot prohibit possession of alcohol in our <br />parks, only consumption. He suggested considering allowing alcohol by permit <br />on an exception basis by approval of the director; for example, the concert in the <br />park series. The Commissioners discussed the current ordinance and how it has <br />been applied. Commissioner Swope spoke about the history of the no alcohol in <br />the parks ordinance/no glass containers and the reason for its establishment. <br />Superintendent Hover confirmed that drinking is occurring in our parks. <br />Commissioner Slusser asked if there is still a problem with glass liter in our play <br />areas after the change in the ordinance, Commissioner Davis asked if we <br />should contact the Police Department since they came to the Commission <br />originally requesting the change in the ordinance from consumption to <br />possession; he would like to see a change that would make the Police <br />Department's job of enforcement easier. Superintendent Hover said staff could <br />draft a list of options for the Commission's March meeting. <br /> <br />ITEM 4. UPDATES <br /> <br />-School Fields Project <br />Superintendent Hover announced there will be a meeting with the Beals Group <br />on March 1 to negotiate an agreement. <br /> <br />-Sequoia High School Pool <br />Superintendent Hover stated a draft report has been developed and is going to <br />be presented to Sequoia High School once it is approved by Director Peter <br />Griffiths. We will discuss our proposal with the district once they review it.
