He stated that this is an on-going educational process and that this department tries to keep the tree companies and the police informed. Commissioner Mortensen will also write a letter on behalf of the Park and Recreation Commission to the Community Development Director.' ITEM 2 - CALIFORNIA PARKS AND RECREATION SOCIETY CONFERENCE Director Griffiths has submitted reservations for the C.P.R.S. Conference to be held in San Francisco on March 12 - 15 for Commissioners Nordness, Swope and Buchan. He has also booked all the Commissioners for the Board members dinner. Commissioner Buchan will also attend an all day class on Friday on "Furid Raising". ITEM 3 - PARK TOUR May 2,1987 was the date agreed upon to have the annual ,park tour. Commissioner Nordness will look into obtaining a SAM-TRANS bus for transportation. NOTE: AS STATED IN FEBRUARY 17,1987 MEMO THE PARK TOUR HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR APRIL 25,1987. Note: All the Commissioners agreed to discuss Item 5 on the agenda before the discussion of Item 4. ITEM 5 - SENIOR CENTER PARKING Director Griffiths gave a status report on the Senior Center Parking situation. Mr. Phil Singer is going to do a study on the parking lot proposed by the Seniors as well as look into utilizing the 4gers astro-turf area. His presentation will include proposed costs, estimated areas for adding a net of 35 parking spaces, etc. There was a discussion of the campaign that the Seniors mounted and presented to the City Council to achieve their goal. Commissioner Buchan suggested that this Commission should be in better communication with the Senior Affairs Commission so as not to be put in an adversarial position before the City Council. (Director Griffiths directed the Secretary to place the members of this Commision on the mailing lists for both the Senior Affairs Commission as well as the Civic Cultural Commission minutes.) Commissioner Mortensen wanted it noted in the record that there was a very interesting editorial in the Times Tribune Newspaper the day after the Council meeting entitled "Paving Park Land for Parking". It discussed car and van pooling, devising a bus route with SAMTRANS, etc. The article ended by stating, "Covering park land with pavement should be the last option instituted." The consensus of the Park and Recreation Commission is that the Seniors will want an expansion of the parking lot again in the future as they are considering their immediate needs rather than a long term plan.
