He stated that this <br />is an on-going educational process and that this department tries to <br />keep the tree companies and the police informed. Commissioner <br />Mortensen will also write a letter on behalf of the Park and <br />Recreation Commission to the Community Development Director.' <br /> <br />ITEM 2 - CALIFORNIA PARKS AND RECREATION SOCIETY CONFERENCE <br /> <br />Director Griffiths has submitted reservations for the C.P.R.S. <br />Conference to be held in San Francisco on March 12 - 15 for <br />Commissioners Nordness, Swope and Buchan. He has also booked all the <br />Commissioners for the Board members dinner. Commissioner Buchan <br />will also attend an all day class on Friday on "Furid Raising". <br /> <br />ITEM 3 - PARK TOUR <br /> <br />May 2,1987 was the date agreed upon to have the annual ,park tour. <br />Commissioner Nordness will look into obtaining a SAM-TRANS bus for <br />transportation. NOTE: AS STATED IN FEBRUARY 17,1987 MEMO THE PARK <br />TOUR HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR APRIL 25,1987. <br /> <br />Note: <br /> <br />All the Commissioners agreed to discuss Item 5 on the agenda <br />before the discussion of Item 4. <br /> <br />ITEM 5 - SENIOR CENTER PARKING <br /> <br />Director Griffiths gave a status report on the Senior Center Parking <br />situation. Mr. Phil Singer is going to do a study on the parking lot <br />proposed by the Seniors as well as look into utilizing the 4gers <br />astro-turf area. His presentation will include proposed costs, <br />estimated areas for adding a net of 35 parking spaces, etc. <br /> <br />There was a discussion of the campaign that the Seniors mounted and <br />presented to the City Council to achieve their goal. Commissioner <br />Buchan suggested that this Commission should be in better <br />communication with the Senior Affairs Commission so as not to be put <br />in an adversarial position before the City Council. (Director <br />Griffiths directed the Secretary to place the members of this <br />Commision on the mailing lists for both the Senior Affairs Commission <br />as well as the Civic Cultural Commission minutes.) <br /> <br />Commissioner Mortensen wanted it noted in the record that there was a <br />very interesting editorial in the Times Tribune Newspaper the day <br />after the Council meeting entitled "Paving Park Land for Parking". <br />It discussed car and van pooling, devising a bus route with SAMTRANS, <br />etc. The article ended by stating, "Covering park land with pavement <br />should be the last option instituted." <br /> <br />The consensus of the Park and Recreation Commission is that the <br />Seniors will want an expansion of the parking lot again in the <br />future as they are considering their immediate needs rather than a <br />long term plan. In regard to the 4gers astro-turf field being used <br />for a parking lot, it was felt pressure would be applied by the <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />
