.. r Park & Recreation Commission Minutes of April 25, 2001 Page 2 ITEM 2 - SKATEPARK UPDATE Superintendent Beth reported that the presentation to City Council on March 26, 2001 went very well although neighbor Vance Smith announced that he was not advised of the meeting. The next meeting with the neighbors will be held on May 8 at 7:00pm at Red Morton Center. Superintendent Beth announced an information packet including a list of frequently asked questions is being mailed to the neighbors. He also reported that staff is looking at different locations within Red Morton Park for the skate park. The Commissioners were provided with a copy of a skate park report from the Community Development Department which has statistical information on other skate parks in California. Superintendent Beth and Supervisor Adilah Haqq-Smith will be attending a skate park meeting in San Rafael on April 26. There will be a skate park task force meeting on May 9 at 4:00pm and meeting notices are being sent to all schools. The Commissioners discussed various issues including awareness of property owners adjacent to the park, off-street parking, underground parking, offsite parking with shuttle, parking behind the McGarvey bleachers, and the concern that we are missing the opportunity to canvas the neighborhood after the Council meeting. Chairperson Joseph and Commissioners Swope and Davis will be in attendance at the May 8 meeting with the neighbors; Commissioner La Berge will be the alternate. The Commissioners discussed receiving copies of correspondence before and after it goes out to the neighbors. ITEM 3 - RECREATION PROGRAMS UPDATE Superintendent Beth provided the Commissioners with a written update on the Recreation and Community Services Division and spoke about several upcoming events. ITEM 4 - STULSAFT PARK PLAY AREA DEDICATION The Commissioners complimented staff on a very successful park dedication and thanked Park Manager Mike Gibbons for his work on the event. Superintendent Hover announced he received a call from the Stulsaft Foundation who are interested in continuing their involvement with the park. He also provided the Commissioners with a copy of a letter he sent to Stulsaft Park neighbors in order to be pro-active on park usage issues. ITEM 5 - 4TH OF JULY FLOAT The Commissioners agreed to again participate in the 4th of July Parade. Commissioner Matt Walsh will be in charge of the design of the 4th of July float which will have a skate park theme. ";,,;,.' , "
