The City has also
contracted with an architect to design the skatepark. Initially, a location
behind the NFL Alumni Building was identified and meetings were held with
the neighbors regarding this site selection. Because many neighbors were in
opposition to the proposed site, the Skatepark Task Force began to look at
other locations within Red Morton Park for the facility. A potential site next
to the tennis court backboard was identified and staff asked the City Arborist
to review this site because of the close proximity to a grove of trees. A staff
report was prepared, which included the results of the City Arborist's report,
and was provided to the Commissioners and neighbors. Director Centeno
stated that if the skatepark was moved to this new location, there are two
options available to the Commission. One option would the removal and
relocation of several trees and the second option would involve the removal
of fewer trees and would also include the redesign of the tennis backboard.
She confirmed that we do not have any usage statistics by the public on the
tennis backboard, and that costs to move or redesign the backboard would
be included in the total project costs.

r'

Vance Smith, 633 Hawes Street, spoke about the previous meeting held with
the neighbors concerning the first proposed skateboard park site and felt that
City-owned properties in other areas of Redwood City would be a better
location. He stated that he believed the center of the park was a better
location than the one behind the NFL Alumni building.

"
,.

,
