<br />Park J& ~creq ti on Comm i ssion <br />Minufês o} May 23, 2001 <br /> <br />Page 3 <br /> <br />Jason Strubing, 2644 Broadway, spoke in support of the new location of the <br />skatepark and felt there is a really need for a skatepark in Redwood City. <br /> <br />Tom Watson, 1038 King Street, felt that an environmental impact report <br />needs to be done because the project has an impact upon the neighborhood. <br />He spoke about issues of skatepark supervision, graffiti, and the closure of <br />the skatepark in San Mateo. <br /> <br />Lucille James, 1230 Roosevelt Avenue, backs up to the proposed skatepark <br />site and does not want the additional noise, trash, nuisance. She said, "We <br />don't want it, we don't need it." <br /> <br />Mike Giannattasio, 1795 Edgewood Road, felt that Redwood City needs a <br />skatepark because the closest park is in Palo Alto. He felt this was a great <br />opportunity for Redwood City and would be a positive influence to get the <br />skaters in one location. He stated that fences usually surround skate parks. <br /> <br />Director Centeno said staff investigated the 4.5 acres of City-owned property <br />near the Police Station and announced that a portion of the land has been <br />rented to a construction company, another section for auto dealer storage, <br />and the remainder is allocated for the Bloomquist extension project. She <br />also stated that the City's Planning Department has advised staff that an EIR <br />is not required for this project. <br /> <br />Ann Palu, Skateboard Task Force member, spoke about the San Mateo <br />skatepark process which was only a two year commitment by the City of San <br />Mateo and the reason for the closure. Ms. Palu was involved in the San <br />Mateo skatepark and explained that the City of San Mateo received more <br />than $15,000 in revenue in several months of the skatepark's operation. She <br />felt that Redwood City youth need a skatepark. <br /> <br />Superintendent Chris Beth spoke about the Skatepark Task Force which is <br />working on developing rules and regulations for the park, staffing, hours of <br />operation, and announced that they are currently collecting information from <br />other cities with skateparks. He asked audience members to please let him <br />know if they would like to be on our mailing list for skatepark meetings. He <br />also confirmed that the State of California has determined skateboarding to <br />be an "at-risk sport" and liability insurance is treated the same as baseball <br />and soccer. <br /> <br />MIS Swope/Truscelli: To approve the change of the skatepark <br />location and to include replacing any trees that will be removed as a <br />result of this project. <br /> <br />Commissioner Walsh asked about the labor and timing involved in getting an <br />EIR and Director Centeno stated the consultant would have a better idea but <br />she estimated 2.3 months.
