<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Park & Recreation Commission <br />Minutes of July 25, 2001 <br /> <br />Page 3 , <br /> <br />Rich Anderson asked about removing the gates from the north side of the <br />tennis courts which would prevent people from skating through the tennis <br />courts. He did not think that other tennis players would mind if this was <br />done because it would prevent damage to the court surface. Mr. Anderson <br />asked how younger, smaller skaters would be accommodated at the park. <br />Jason Strubing stated that the design of the park will allow for areas for <br />experienced and less experienced skaters and did not feel that this would be <br />a problem. Superintendent Hover said the gates at the tennis courts could <br />be removed on a temporary basis to see what the response will be from the <br />tennis players. Director Centeno invited the Commissioners to be a part of <br />the presentation to Council on August 13. <br /> <br />ITEM 2 - SUMMER PROGRAM ACTIVITIES UPDATE <br /> <br />Superintendent Chris Beth reviewed the recreation summer activities with the <br />Commissioners. Activities included: <br />-We are half way through the program year <br />-5,755 program slots have been filled as compared to 3,060 for last year <br />-Approximately 3,000 participants have registered for classes this summer <br />-Drop-in park program has 30-40 kids per day per park and we are adding 2 <br />more park sites <br />.After school programs are operating at five different school sites; <br />participation is 80-90 kids per day <br />-We are adding more Parent/Tot programs; one will be added at Stulsaft Park <br />in August <br />-Make-A-Circus will be held at Red Morton Park on August 2 <br />~Redwood City Day at the Giants is August 5 <br />-We will be trying out an on-line registration program this Fall with 30 of our <br />sports classes. <br />-More than 70 staff have been hired this summer <br />-We have filled two recreation manager positions and are in the process of <br />recruiting for three assistant recreation center supervisor positions <br />-We are looking at having two Youth Advisory Boards; one for older age <br />group and one for younger age group <br /> <br />ITEM 3- UPDATES <br /> <br />-School Fields <br />Superintendent Hover reported that Taft Field is doing better and <br />improvements have been made including modifications to the fence. Garfield <br />project is proceeding and is expected to be completed in May 2002. He <br />reported that several of the Commissioners visited Valley Christian High <br />School in San Jose to look at their artificial turf field which is being considered <br />for Hoover Park. An independent analysis study on the turf is being <br />forwarded to the Commission. A sample of the artificial turf was showed to <br />the Commissioners at the meeting. <br /> <br />
