.-

. Park and Recreation Commission
- Minutes of March 27, 2002

...

Page 2

Adilah Haqq, Youth and Teen Manager, reviewed her programs which cover
youth from 2-18 years of age. She spoke regarding the grant funded After
School sites at six locations and the collaboration with the CARON group in the
North Fair Oaks Area to place a Spanish section in the brochure and do door to
door outreach in the Spanish speaking community. She spoke about new
programs such as Little Kids Klub, the Youth and Teen Advisory Boards, Middle
School Dances that draw 600 youth from all Redwood City Schools, and the
"Cultural High" Teen Poetry Contest sponsored by the Teen Advisory Board.
Summer is a particularly busy time for this unit with Camp Stulsaft, Camp Great
Escape, My First Camp, along with the Playground and School Site Programs.
Her unit is responsible for Make A Circus, the Halloween Spooktacular, and
Breakfast with Santa and is also heading up the skate park project.

ITEM 2 - REDWOOD SHORES EUCALYPTUS TREE REMOVALS

Superintendent Hover reviewed the press release noting that several TV stations
had called as a result of a recent death caused by a eucalyptus crashing into an
occupied car. He noted a good system has been set up between our department
and Public Works Services to deal with trees that are within the area of
responsibility of the Parks Division. The public notice process that was
developed also seemed to work well as few calls have been received. This
process involves going to the Redwood Shores Homeowners Association,
posting on the site, and notifying City Council.

ITEM 3 - ROOSEVELT RECONSTRUCTION

Superintendent Hover directed the Commission's attention to the flyer included in
their packets noting that the construction, which will totally reconstruct the street
and utilities from Hudson to Valota, would impact our buildings and the park.

ITEM 4- UPDATES

Pet Parade - Chairperson Joseph brought the Commission up to date on plans
including the number and type of vendors and exhibitors, activities planned and
support needed. Commissioners Swope and Truscelli indicated they would be
'able to help on the day of the event.

Hoover and Garfield Fields - Superintendent Hover indicated Hoover Field bids
will be opened on 4/10/02 and should go to Council for the award of bid on
4/22/02. He shared his work with Engineering and our architect on how to
structure the bid such that we are assured of getting the best quality product at
the best possible price. Gañield School fields are in their maintenance period
and are being monitored by staff for appropriate root growth. A July opening is
expected.
