Recreation Supervisors Jodi Fernandez (YAB liaison) and Mark Yasuda (TAB liaison) and PAL Coordinator Jennifer Dobbs were introduced. Commissioner Joseph said she was distressed that the advisory boards did not have a better sense of their purpose. She felt there needs to be better communication between programs we already have and to let the youth know about those programs. She also felt there should be a formal orientation process for TAB and YAB members. Commissioner Slusser felt there was sincere value in having youth involved and we need a "bridge" to make this happen. The Commissioners thanked Ms. Silvas and Ms. Villagra for their presentation. ITEM 2 - PRESENTATION FROM RECREATION MANAGER ERIC'NEWBY Sports & Aquatics Manager Eric Newby shared an organizational chart of his division with the Commission. He stated that due to budget cuts, there are two positions currently unfilled but that the existing staff has pulled together and is working very hard. Manager Newby spoke a.bout the many partnerships the department has with community sports groups and the ways the groups work together to provide sports opportunities for Redwood City youth and adults. He introduced Erin Niemeyer, Recreation Coordinator for the Middle School Sports Program/ADAL and PAL. Erin divides her time 50/50 in each program. The Commissioners congratulated Manager Newby on his successful programs and providing athletic opportunities to the community. ITEM 3 - REQUEST FOR RECOMMENDATION ON PERMIT FOR BATTING CAGE AT HOOVER PARK BY REDWOOD CITY AMERICAN LITTLE LEAGUE Superintendent Beth spoke about a request from Redwood City American Little League (RCALL) to install a batting cage at Hoover Park. Staff requested the Commission consider recommending that City Council approve a revocable permit for the RCALL. Superintendent Beth stated the group would pay for the batting cage and its installation, and would reimburse the City for any maintenance costs. Our department would be responsible for scheduling use of the batting cage; permits would be issued to the users by Recreation Manager Eric Newby. The Commissioners discussed the request by RCALL; liability and safety issues; compliance with rules; near neighbor survey; suggested that RCALL donate the batting cage to the City after it is built; need to have a process in place before bringing revocable permits to the Commission; need to see plans/drawings of batting cage before approval; and the need for more information. After much discussion, staff agreed to bring this matter back to the Commission at their January meeting.
