,.
i

Park and Recreation Commission
Minutes of March 23, 2005

Page 3

revenue increases as well as another $500,000 in options that will be
presented to Council.

-Parks for the Future
Director Centeno reported about the effort, led by the San Mateo County
Pa.rks Foundation, to secure permanent funding for parks throughout the
County. Currently, the proposal is for a 1/8-cent sales tax, which would yield
about $16,000,000 per year in new revenues. There are several scenarios
for fund distribution being considered with Redwood City receiving about
$800,000. The County is supporting the proposal because its parks budget
has been cut about 40% over recent years. This sales tax would require 2/3-
voter approval. The next meeting for the group will be held on April 14th. To
date, the County Park Foundation has been providing financial support for
this concept.

ITEM 5 - REPORT ON CALIFORNIA PARK AND RECREATION SOCIETY
(CPRS) CONFERENCE

Vice Chairperson Morton reported on his attendance at the Annual
Conference and complimented the level of support that Redwood City was
providing to the Society via staff serving at the State level as well as
participating in the Conference as presenters and attendees.

ITEM 6 - REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF NEW COMMISSION CALENDAR

The Parks and Recreation Commission would like the calendar to indicate
specific dates where applicable. There was a request for a Park Tour.
Superintendent Hover will email Commissioners for an available Saturday
from approximately 10-1 p.m. Commissioner Swope indicated she was not
available on -May 14th.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Commissioner Joseph reported on preparations for the Pet Parade which will
be held on Saturday, April 9th.

Superintendent Beth reported on PACT for Kids, which will bring 60
kindergarteners from Hawes School to Red Morton Park on April 22nd for a
series of fun activities that teach youth to be respectful and enjoy our local
parks. The project came about at the suggestion of Lead Building
Maintenance Worker Daniel Yee as a result of his participation in the City
Profiles in Leadership Program.

Commissioner Joseph indicated she had received the invitation for
participation in this year's 4th of July Celebration and asked that another
Commissioner take responsibility for the float development. This item will be
placed on the April Agenda for discussion.

..
