1. Vice Mayor Pierce — announced that the League of California Cities is holding
the annual conference in San Francisco on October 5 -8 in San Francisco.
10. ADJOURNMENT —11:45 p.m.
M/S Hartnett/Howard to adjourn until the next Joint Study Session of the City Council,
Planning Commission and Architectural Review Committee of October 3, 2005.
Council Member Hartnett requested adjournment in honor of former Mayor Carl
Britschgi. He stated that while growing up in Redwood City, he had the opportunity to
meet Carl Britschgi who died on September 12 at the age of 93. He served on the
City Council for 10 years with one term as Mayor; represented Redwood City in the
State Assembly for 14 years; is a graduate of Sequoia Hospital and Santa Clara
University where he was a member of the football team; was a member of the
precursor team to the S.F. 49ers serving as quarterback; longtime supporter of Santa
Clara University and Redwood City — so much that he had a son, Brent, who also
became Council Member and Mayor. His legacy lives on and he will be missed by
not only his family, but the entire community of Redwood City.
Council Member Howard requested adjournment in honor of Pete Uccelli who
developed Pete's Harbor, fighting and winning a David and Goliath battle with the
State in the 1980's died on Thursday, September 22 in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
He was a gregarious man, widely known in Redwood City, an active community
member and generous donor to local causes. He began developing Pete's Harbor
after buying the 21 -acre waterfront property in the 1950's that eventually grew into a
280 slip marina and is one of the few remaining privately held marinas on the San
Francisco Bay. After growing up in South San Francisco, having served in WWII, in
1949 opened a working man's bar called Pete's Tonga Bar; in 1973 he opened the
Harbor House Restaurant, never owned a boat himself, was a pilot and rancher,
owned a ranch in Nevada raising beefalo and participated in numerous local causes.
He established the Sequoia Awards and an annual $2,500.00 award for the Cow
Palace rodeo. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Paula, son Richard and
daughters Sharon and Patricia; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia S.
