6.2.A. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
February 26, 2018
SUBJECT
Resolution approving the temporary street closure for the Stanford University Triathlon
Team's 14th annual "Treeathlon" event
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a Resolution designating the event route for the 14th annual "Treeathlon" event
sponsored by the Stanford University Triathlon Team and approve the temporary partial
closure of Seaport Boulevard as designated in Exhibit "A"
BACKGROUND
The Stanford University Triathlon Team has held the "Treeathlon" event in Redwood
City for the past 13 years. If approved, the event will occur on March 3 and 4, 2018.
ANALYSIS
The Stanford Triathlon Team is run entirely by team members, mostly students, and
brings professional training to anybody in the Stanford community regardless of age or
skill level. The "Treeathlon" event is a fundraiser for the team's trip to the National
Collegiate Championships in Clemson, South Carolina. It is also an important part of the
California collegiate triathlon circuit, as well as a great venue for local and regional
amateur/age group athletes. The team hopes to continue to use the event to showcase
the sport of triathlon in Redwood City and raise the profile of the Stanford Triathlon and
Redwood City within the regional triathlon community.
As part of their fundraising activities, the Stanford Triathlon Team proposes hosting
Sprint races (collegiate), F1 races (youth/juniors), and a "Saplingathlon" (6-12 year
olds). It is anticipated that upwards of 500 runners will participate in the event this year
and registration is capped at 575 entrants. The event is slated to start and finish on the
1700 block of Seaport Boulevard.
If approved, on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at 12:00 p.m., the "Saplingathlon" begins.
There will be four waves of competitors in a variety of run/bike events. The
"Saplingathlon" will be contained entirely within the Pacific Shores business complex,
and will only require partial closure of the easterly end of Seaport Blvd. that
