REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the City Manager August 5, 2002 Subject Street Light and Traffic Signal Parts and Materials Purchase Recommendation By Motion, accept the bid and approve the purchase of street light and traffic signal parts and supplies from Consolidated Electrical Distributors of Redwood City, in the amount of $37,796.20. Background The Public Works Services Department purchases parts and supplies to maintain the street light and traffic signal systems. Routinely used items anticipated for the year were compiled into a unit-priced bid package. The bids were sent to the five suppliers the City has used in the past and opened at the Public Works Services office on June 7, 2002. One bid was received. The bid from Consolidated Electrical Distributors is 1.11% above the staff estimate. Consolidated Electrical Distributors has been the iow bid vendor for the past three years. Bidder Amount Consolidated Electrical Distributors, Redwood City, CA $37,796.20 Royal Wholesale Electric, Redwood City, CA No bid Specialty Lamp, Redwood City, CA No bid Electrical Distributors, Redwood City, CA No bid Staff Estimate $34,000.00 Staff believes there was only one valid bid received because Consolidated Electric has been the low bidder for the last three years and the other vendors did not want to spend the time or effort to bid and not be selected. Alternatives There is one alternative staff considered: Re-bid the purchase. Re-bidding the purchase will cause additional staff time and effort. It could cause a delay in work waiting for the new bid and Council approval. A re-bid will most likely not improve the prices received.
