I REPORT <br />I To the Honorable Mayor and Council <br /> From the C~ty Manager <br /> <br /> August5,2002 <br /> <br /> Subject <br /> The proposed use of 2002 Local Law Enfomement Block Grant (LLEBG) funds by the Redwood City <br /> Police Department. <br /> <br /> Recommendation <br /> After completion of the public hearing, approve the Police Chief's recommendation to dedicate the <br /> funds to the procurement of law enforcement related equipment and training. <br /> <br /> Background <br /> The Omnibus Appropriations Act authorized the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance to make <br /> funds available to units of local government under the LLEBG program for the purposes of reducing <br /> crime and improving public safety. A public hearing must be held prior to the awarding of the grant. <br /> This is the seventh consecutive year the City of Redwood City will receive the grant. This year's award <br /> is $64, 982. Funds must be used for one or more of the following seven proposed areas: <br /> <br /> · Law Enforcement Support: Hire, train additional officers, pay overtime to law enfomement <br /> officers, or procure equipment related to law enforcement functions. <br /> <br /> · Enhance security measures in and around schools or other facilities location considered a <br /> special risk for incidents of crime <br /> <br /> · Establish or support drug courts. <br /> <br /> · Enhance the adjudication of cases involving violent offenders, including cases involving violent <br /> juvenile offenders. <br /> <br /> · Establishing a multi-jurisdictional task force to work with federal law enforcement to prevent and <br /> control crime. <br /> <br /> · Establish crime prevention programs to control, detect, or investigate crime or the prosecution of <br /> criminals. <br /> <br /> · Defray the cost of indemnification insurance for law enforcement officers. <br /> <br /> <br />
