evaluate the design before it is made permanent, and provide another opportunity for
community input.

ANALYSIS
Design
The Hopkins corridor between Alameda de las Pulgas and El Camino Real has three
distinct sections defined by the roadway width and the density and type of adjacent
uses. Key elements of the corridor design include:
Alameda de las Pulgas to Nevada Street (single-family homes, 28’ roadway):
· Convert Hopkins – Alameda connector to one-way, going towards Alameda de las
Pulgas. This improvement is currently included on the conceptual plan; however,
additional analysis will be done to ensure that this change does not have a major
effect on the operation of the all-way stop controlled intersection. If analysis shows a
major impact on the intersection, the community and Council will be notified, and this
item would be removed from the final design.
· Raised corner islands at intersections with large curb radii to slow vehicles and to
reduce crossing distances without negatively impacting the flow of storm water
· Increase signage/markings to make drivers aware of the speed limit earlier along the
corridor
Nevada Street to Clinton Street (single-family homes, 56’ roadway):
· Raised median islands (generally two per block) to reduce speeding by visually
narrowing the roadway, to discourage illegal passing in the two-way center turn lane,
and to provide opportunities for additional street trees
· Bulbouts/curb extensions at key crossings to reduce the speed of turning vehicles, to
increase visibility of people crossing the street, and to reduce the crossing distance
for people crossing the street
· Additional crosswalk treatments at Lowell Street (flashing pedestrian warning signs)
and King Street (raised crosswalk) due to high activity to/from Stafford Park
Clinton Street to El Camino Real (multi-family housing and commercial, 56’ roadway):
· Buffered bicycle lanes with strategically placed raised features to reduce speeding
by visually narrowing the roadway and to discourage illegal passing in the bicycle
lane
· Raised median and bulbout at Birch to reduce wrong-way driving on this one-way
segment
The full conceptual design is available for review on the project’s website
(http://www.redwoodcity.org/home/showdocument?id=14444). The planning-level
cost estimate for the improvements is $1,250,000.
8.A. - Page 3
