353 Main Street Apartments <br />Redwood City, California <br />May 1, 2018 <br />(Originol Report Dated November 18,2076) <br />Be coarse grained and have a plasticity index of less than L5 and/or an <br />expansion index less than 20; <br />Be free of organics, debris or other deleterious material; <br />Have a maximum rock size of 3 inches; and <br />Contain sufficient clay binder to allow for stable foundation and utility <br />trench excavations. <br />Proposed imported soils should be submitted at least three days before being transported <br />to the site for evaluation by the geotechnical engineer. During importation to the site the <br />material should be further reviewed on an intermittent basis. <br />Foundations <br />L. The proposed apartment building may be supported on a deep foundation system <br />consisting of drilled displacement piles (DDP) connected with a structural floor slab. Local <br />specialty contractors that can install the Drill Displacement Piles (DDP) are Farrell Design- <br />Build, lnc., Malcolm Drilling, and Berkel & Company Contractors. <br />Exterior Flatwork <br />L. Exterior flatwork should have a minimum thickness of 4 full inches and should be <br />reinforced as directed by the architect/engineer. <br />Exterior flatwork that will not experience vehicular should be cast over a minimum of 4 <br />inches of compacted aggregate base. However, use of a greater thickness of aggregate <br />base would enhance the flat work performance. The edge of the flat work should be <br />thickened to penetrate at least 3 inches into the subgrade soil if only 4 inches of non- <br />expansion material is utilized. Exterior flatwork that will experience vehicular traffic <br />should be underlain by at least 6 inch layer of compacted aggregate. <br />Assuming that movement (i.e., L/4-inch or more) of exterior flatwork beyond the <br />structure is acceptable, the flatwork should be designed to be independent of the building <br />foundations. The flatwork should not be doweled to foundations, and a separator should <br />be placed between the two. <br />4.To reduce shrinkage cracks in concrete, the concrete aggregates should be of appropriate <br />size and proportion, the water/cement ratio should be low, the concrete should be <br />properly placed and finished, contraction joints should be installed, and the concrete <br />should be properly cured.
