S. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY — <br />A. P.A.C.T. Graduation Ceremony <br />Mayor Ira and Vice Mayor Pierce honored the most recent participants in the <br />City's Partnership Academy for Community Training (P.A.C.T.) program. <br />B. Presentation by Assembly Member Ira Ruskin on the Past Legislative Year <br />State Assembly Member Ira Ruskin presented an overview of the legislation he <br />had sponsored in the last year on areas such as environmental safety, disposal of <br />hazardous waste, safeguards for drinking water, enforcement of weights and <br />measures devices around the state, a teacher /school paperwork reduction act, <br />and child safety measures. Ruskin announced that he had been appointed Chair <br />of the Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee, that he was also <br />serving as a member of the standing Higher Education and Banking /Finance <br />Commitees, and that he was Chair of the Select Committee on Nanotechnology <br />and Emerging Technologies. He encouraged citizens to be in touch with him, and <br />called upon Council Members to bring forth ideas for legislation that he could <br />advocate on behalf of for the District. <br />C. Proclamation recognizing National Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day <br />Community Development Services Manager Passanisi presented a Powerpoint <br />presentation (on file in the Office of the City Clerk) about the City's use of the GIS <br />program. Mayor Ira congratulated Passanisi and City staff on the use of the <br />program, and presented him with a ceremonial proclamation. <br />6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR - <br />Janet Borgens introduced student Randy Barker, who is new to the community and <br />goes to Woodside High School and wants to learn more about City government, and <br />commended him on attending the City Council meeting. Borgens also spoke on the <br />topic of the Fire Department and the Friendly Acres neighborhood. She described an <br />emergency trunk that the neighborhood has and thanked Dewey Durand and the rest <br />of the Fire Department for helping neighborhood volunteers clean and file emergency <br />water barrels. <br />Cherlene Wright expressed congratulations to the Council Members who had recently <br />been re- elected. She spoke on behalf of the Redwood City Education Foundation <br />about two upcoming events. The first was the Foundation's showing of a movie on the <br />topic of California schools called "First to Worst," taking place on Wednesday, <br />November 16, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. in McKinley Auditorium.
