ANALYSIS <br />The San Mateo County Elections Office provides certain election services for the City of <br />Redwood City and other agencies and districts by the execution of a binding contract for <br />services (attached). Therefore, the City Council is being requested to call the General <br />Municipal Election and to consolidate it with the Consolidated Municipal, School and <br />Special District election to be held on the same day for the purpose of electing three <br />City Council Members for the full term of four years each and voting on any measures <br />submitted by the City Council to the voters. <br /> <br />The calling of the election must occur prior to the nomination period and the City <br />Council must act in regards to other matters in advance of the filing period. In addition, <br />the City Clerk will be publishing a Notice of Election between the dates of July 2 and <br />July 16, 2018. For those interested in running for Office of City Council, the candidate <br />filing period will be between July 16 and August 10, 2018. Nomination papers are <br />available through the City Clerk by appointment only. <br /> <br />The candidate statement is optional, and if a candidate opts to have a candidate <br />statement it will be published in three languages since Redwood City is in a tri-lingual <br />county. It is recommended to the City Council that candidates choosing to have a <br />candidate statement will pay the estimated cost of filing and translating their candidate <br />statements at the time of filing their nomination papers. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />The City Council could elect to conduct its own elections but this would dramatically <br />increase the costs to the City and to candidates. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />There will be a cost to the election, and this cost depends on multiple factors. The <br />approximate cost per registered voter could be between $3.40 and $4.08. As of June <br />13, 2018 the number of registered voters in Redwood City, according to the report <br />posted at the San Mateo County website, was 40,292.
