Carmel Historic District & Revising Residential Design Review <br />Guidelines <br />Mr. Turner, <br />I have been a resident of Redwood City's Mount Carmel neighborhood since 2009. 1 was attracted to <br />the area by the neighborhood's historic architectural charm, greenery, tranquility, stable population, <br />strong sense of community and walkability. I'm out walking and meeting my neighbors every day and <br />know that many of them share my strong affection for this unique neighborhood. <br />While I appreciate that regional economic development and growth make this area increasingly <br />attractive, I am concerned that redevelopment is rapidly destroying the area's irreplaceable charm <br />and call on the city and city council to find innovative ways now to promote the maintenance, <br />restoration and improvement of existing Mount Carmel architecture. We need to act now before we <br />lose any more architectural gems and transform the Mount Carmel neighborhood into a village of <br />McMansions. Monster homes„ such as the oversized 3,880 square foot, 5 -bedroom house proposed <br />for the 330 Grand Street property, don't belong in this neighborhood. Allowing more oversized homes <br />will only weaken neighbor -to -neighbor interactions, reduce the area's charm and desirability and <br />detract from the overall sense of community. <br />What can we in the community do to help the city protect Mount Carmel so that we don't lose any <br />more properties such as the tarnished but charming 1930's house currently on the 330 Grand Street <br />property? <br />Thank you for your service to Redwood City, <br />Ron Susek <br />
