5. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br />Jeff Gee, representing the Redwood City /San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce <br />announced that the Chamber had been named the third largest Chamber in the Bay <br />Area for the fourth year in a row. He further announced various upcoming events that <br />included the Progress Seminar that is set for April 7 -9, 2006; the Redwood City State <br />of the City on January 20 and the Annual Chamber Awards Dinner on January 26, <br />2006. The Annual Awards Dinner will honor outgoing Chair Mike Giari; welcome Barry <br />Jolette as incoming Chair; recognize Athena Award winner Mary Huss; and recognize <br />business leaders in the community for outstanding contributions in education with the <br />award of the Golden Apple Awards. The Golden Apple Awards will go to Pete's Harbor <br />and Electronic Arts. He thanked the Council and staff for ongoing support of the <br />Chamber. <br />Teri Chin, representing the Redwood City Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Planning <br />Committee, invited the general public as the Council had already received invitations <br />to the 21 celebration. Saturday, January 14, from 10 -4 an all day event will occur at <br />the Boys and Girls Club in East Palo Alto with an honoring of three Redwood City <br />residents who have fought for civil rights and community issues in the community to <br />occur at 1 p.m. Those residents are Fernando Vega, Kathleen Mahany and Dorothy <br />Page to be honored together with individuals from East Palo Alto. She further stated <br />that the Freedom Train will go from San Jose to San Francisco on January 16, <br />departing from the San Mateo Caltrain station. Partnering with the Peninsula group will <br />begin with the celebration at 9:30 and train departure at 10:30 a.m. A candlelight vigil <br />commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. and remembering Rosa Parks will occur on <br />January 19 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 178 Clinton Street. <br />Tom Mohr, President of Canada College, invited the Council to a reception being held <br />at the college on January 31 at 1:00 p.m. honoring the retirement of Dick Claire and <br />Diane Eyer. He stated that both have been giants in contributing to the college and <br />their cities. <br />Steven Howard stated various code enforcement issues that included on El Camino <br />Real near Edgewood where a gas station has illegal "A" frames with half a dozen <br />banners hanging from it; across the street is a flooring store with four wooden signs <br />that have been tacked up to the building; a 7 -11 store has a marble sign taped to a <br />post out in front; and an auto dealership on a flag lot with a sign tacked on the side of <br />a fence. He stated that there are various other examples and that he understands <br />health issues come first.
