6. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY — <br />A. Presentation: Sequoia Union High School District — Superintendent Pat Gemma <br />Superintendent Gemma provided the Council with what he termed, " an update on <br />plans that the Sequoia High School has to house a significant increase in students <br />at what we will now call the Sequoia Area or Sequoia property ". The area is <br />bordered by the El Camino, Broadway, Brewster, Elwood and James Street. The <br />existing property of the Sequoia High School houses 1,650 students, the District <br />offices, and District corporate yard. The planning thus far will have impact on the <br />citizens of Redwood City, particularly to those neighboring the site. He further <br />explained the background leading up to this point. He then delineated the <br />temporary plan. <br />Council asked various questions associated with the plan and made comments <br />such as encouraging the District to work with the City staff in gaining information <br />on Police and landscaping experience. <br />Susan Swope, as a neighbor of the Sequoia High School District, stated that her <br />initial reaction to moving Redwood Continuation is that it is not an ideal solution. <br />She stated she understands Council has no jurisdiction over any of the school <br />districts in Redwood City. She further stated that the City has been a terrific <br />partner to many organizations and she urged the Council to work as hard as <br />possible to help the District find a better solution. She stated her belief that <br />Proposition 39 was not meant to disadvantage the high school district and <br />community as would the impacts in the use of the tennis courts and additional <br />traffic. <br />B. Presentation: Gangs — Chief of Police Carlos Bolanos <br />Police Chief Bolanos introduced Captain Chris Cesena, Sergeant Sean Hart and <br />Officer Dan Smith. He began with an overview and update on the gang situation in <br />the community. Sergeant Hart and Officer Smith provided a gang awareness <br />presentation. (PowerPoint presentation on file in the City Clerk Office.) <br />Council Members thanked the Police Department for its work and asked how the <br />community can assist.
