APPENDIX <br />Baseline Cost Assumptions & Considerations <br />The costs of creating an urban park vary widely <br />based on site conditions, design, program and <br />use. Preliminary construction cost forecasts <br />presented in Table 1 were developed from a range <br />of speculated park improvements, and are general <br />cost assumptions at the very preliminary stages of <br />the study. <br />The baseline understanding of typical park <br />improvement components and rough cost per square <br />footage were derived from a recent Redwood City <br />dog park development which yielded a $35 per <br />square foot cost. Approximate baseline infrastructure <br />improvement costs include: hardscape removal and <br />replacement, storm drain relocation and installation, <br />general landscaping, irrigation improvements, slight <br />re -grading, and minor utility adjustments. <br />The typical urban park cost of $65 per square foot <br />was gathered from Jamison Square in Portland, <br />Oregon, which includes an interactive water feature, <br />play area, stone terrace, mature trees, and vendor <br />areas. A large-scale intensive urban park cost <br />forecast was taken from the recent City of San Jose <br />St. James Park competition that yielded a cost of <br />$110 per square foot for extensive improvements <br />that included numerous site structures, sculptures, <br />interactive water feature, and a large playground.
